Surface-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization of N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide (DMAPMA) on the silicon wafer was conducted in attempt to create controllable cationic polymer films. The RAFT agent-immobilized substrate was prepared by the silanization of hydroxyl groups on silicon wafer with 3-aminopropylthriethoxysilane (APTS) and by the amide reaction of amine groups of APTS with ester groups of 4-cyano-4-((thiobenzoyl) sulfanyl) pentanoic succinimide ester (CPSE); followed by the RAFT polymerization of DMAPMA using a ''free'' RAFT agent, that is, 4-cyanopentanoic acid dithiobenzoate (CPAD) and an initiator, that is, 4,4 0 -azobis-4-cyanopentanoic acid (CPA). The formation of homogeneous tethered poly(N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide) [poly(DMAPMA)] brushes, whose thick-ness can be tuned by reaction time varying, is evidenced by using the combination of grazing angle attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contactangle measurements. The calculation of grafting parameters from the number-average molecular weight, M n (g/mol) and ellipsometric thickness, h (nm) values indicated the synthesis of densely grafted poly(DMAPMA) films and allowed us to predict a polymerization time for forming a ''brush-like'' conformation for the chains.

Several methods of surface‐initiated polymerization have been developed9–11 especially living radical polymerizations, such as nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP),12, 13 atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP),14–18 single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP),19–21 and reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization 22–26. Low pressure oxygen plasma has been used to improve the surface wettability of a polyurethane film. The modifications induced by the plasma treatment in the material were analyzed using contact angle measurements. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique was used for surface characterization of the plasma-treated films. Atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze topography changes due to the plasma-etching mechanism. The results show a much better surface wettability of the film even for short exposure times, with a considerable increase in the surface energy values. As expected, functionalization with oxygen plasma is mainly because of surface oxidation with species like (CÀ ÀO, C¼ ¼O, OH, etc). An aging process with regard to polar groups rearrangement has been observed, thus promoting a partial hydrophobic recovery. Besides functionalization, the surface wettability of the material improves as a consequence of a slight increase in surface roughness because of the etching effect of oxygen plasma.

This paper provides a second update to the review of reversible deactivation radical polymerization achieved with thiocarbonylthio compounds (ZC(=S)SR) by a mechanism of reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) that was published in June 2005 (Aust. J. Chem. 2005, 58, 379-410). The first update was published in November 2006 (Aust. J. Chem. 2006, 59, 669-692). This review cites over 500 papers that appeared during the period mid-2006 to mid-2009 covering various aspects of RAFT polymerization ranging from reagent synthesis and properties, kinetics and mechanism of polymerization, novel polymer syntheses and a diverse range of applications. Significant developments have occurred, particularly in the areas of novel RAFT agents, techniques for end-group removal and transformation, the production of micro/nanoparticles and modified surfaces, and biopolymer conjugates both for therapeutic and diagnostic applications.
