Preparation of Tradescantia pallida-mediated zinc oxide nanoparticles and their activity against cervical cancer cell lines

Abstract: Purpose: To synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using Tradescantia pallida. (Commelinaceae) and determine their fluorescent and cytotoxic properties. Methods: ZnO NPs were synthesized according to a simple protocol using T. pallida aqueous leaf extract (TPALE). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to analyze the morphology of the ZnO NPs. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements

“…However, only few studies have been conducted to evaluate the bioactivity of Tradescantia extracts (Table 5, Ref. [30,[32][33][34]37,39,43,[47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54]). The following subsections describe the main studies carried out on the evaluation of the bioactive properties of Tradescantia extracts.…”

“…The monitoring of the T. pallida 10% aqueous extracts effectiveness on P. xylostella evaluated and we verified potential for controlling the species. The literature presents the antimicrobial potential in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Tan et al 2014), antioxidants (Silva et al 2015) and anticancer activities against cervical cancer cell lines (Li et al 2017), with positive results for tests performed with ethanolic and methanolic extracts. Through these results, we can also include ovipodeterrent and phagodeterrent action to this plant species.…”

“…According to Li et al (2017), 1000 µg/ ml ZnO NPs showed cytotoxicity against cervical cancer lines, where 98.9 % of cancer cells died. ZnO NPs indicate the effective preferential cell cytotoxicity the concentration ranging from 25 to 100 μg/ ml with improved preferential cytotoxicity presented by the Triton X-100 modi cation (Namvar et al 2014).…”
