Preparation of thin-film YBaCuO quantum interference devices with a lift-off technique

Abstract: Highly textured and polycrystalline YBaCuO thin films were sputtered on cold MgO single-crystal substrates. After annealing in oxygen for 1 h at 920 °C, the films show critical temperatures Tc,end up to 74.5 K. Superconducting quantum interference devices (dc SQUID’s) structured in ≊1-μm-thick polycrystalline films with a lift-off technique exhibit a critical current of 2 mA at 5.5 K and 35 μA at 72 K. Voltage modulation can be observed at temperatures up to 63 K.

“…Due to its importance for superconducting electronic applications much effort has been spent on the preparation and study of high-To superconducting thin film Josephson junctions. The first high-Tc junction was made at IBM using thin films of YBa2CuaOx (YBCO) [ 1 ], rapidly being followed by a number of others [2][3][4]. Shortly afterwards also junctions in TBCCO [5] and BSCCO [6] materials were fabricated.…”

“…In order to apply these thin films to e.g. superconducting electronics [3,4], the eIectrical film properties have to be optimized with regard to a high transition temperature as well as a high critical current. Furthermore, the lithographic treatment and multilayer techniques require flat surfaces and simple structuring possibilities without degradation of the film properties.…”

“…Josephson effect and DC SQUID behaviour have been observed in high Tc superconductors by various groups. DC SQUID based on bulk (Kataria et al 1989), thick (Lin et al 1989) and thin films (Koch et al 1987(Koch et al , 1989Nakane et al 1987;Hauser et al 1988) have been made using intergranular weak links in small constriction of the sample. RF SQUID behaviour have been demonstrated in bulk sample of Y-Ba-Cu-O at 77K (CoMough et al 1987;Pegrum et al 1988;Tichy et al 1988).…”
