SUPRAMOLECULAR APPROACH TO NANOTECHNOLOGY. Brazilian science is evolving rapidly and steadly in the last 10 years, reaching the 15º place in the international ranking. Research in nanotechnology is following a similar way generating new scientific and technological knowledge in several frontiers but specially in the interfaces of two or more areas, where Chemistry is consolidating itself as a central science. In this context, the supramolecular approach is a very promissing one because it allows the build-up of a chemical inteligence using all the sistematized knowledge for the design and development of new nanomaterials and products. The great challenge of Chemistry is not decrease the dimensionality of the materials but instead find ways to increase the dimensionality and structural complexity keeping strict control on the interactions between the components, in order to generate materials with new properties and functionalities. Unfortunately, the current vigorous advancement of scientific research has not been followed by the transformation of such knowhow into patents and produts. Therefore much efforts should be devoted to build a national science and technology program, joining all the segments of the society involved in the technological development (university, institutes of technological research, industry and government) in order to promote the furtherance of the Brazilian technological base. Only in this way it is possible to evolve to a technological society capable to transform the scientific knowledge into wealthy, thus sustaining the socioeconomic development of the country.Keywords: nanotechnology; supramolecular approach; nanomaterials. INTRODUÇÃOCiência e tecnologia sempre andam lado a lado e dependem do desenvolvimento técnico dos instrumentos de medida, de observação, de análise e de produção, que são utilizados de maneira integrada para desenvolver novos produtos. Assim, os estudos da física e da biologia baseavam-se em materiais de dimensões macroscópicas. Porém, o aperfeiçoamento e desenvolvimento constante da instrumentação, principalmente a partir de meados do século passado, tornaram possível o estudo dos materiais em escalas cada vez menores, chegando à escala nano (Figura 1). Essa estratégia possibilitou a diminuição progressiva dos dispositivos de estado sólido, provocando um aumento extraordinário do número de dispositivos que podem ser acomodados numa mesma área. Outra conseqüência foi a diminuição do consumo de energia e a possibilidade de integração de um número sempre crescente de dispositivos, tal que a capacidade dos processadores dobrou a cada 24 meses (Lei de Moore) nos últi-mos 40 anos. Atualmente um processador de última geração como o Intel Itanium de duplo processador contém mais de 1x10 9 transistores (http://www.intel.com/technology/mooreslaw/index.htm).Comportamento similar pode ser observado no caso da biologia, que iniciou com a sistematização dos organismos vivos pelos seus fenótipos e atualmente estuda a base molecular dos processos biológicos e de sua expressão....

Polysiloxanes, which can add high softness and lubricity to treated textiles, have been proposed as softening post-finishing agents for fabric. However, the hydrophobicity of the finished fabric is not satisfactory. In this work, long-chain fluoroalkyl acrylate was used to modify the polysiloxane, aimed at improving hydrophobicity of the finished fabric and retaining its softness simultaneously. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectra ( 1 H/ 13 C NMR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the chemical structure and thermal stability of the as-prepared polymer. The modified polysiloxane was tested as a finishing agent. Its film morphologies on the fabric surface and on a silicon wafer were determined. Chemical compositions and performance properties of the finished fabric were investigated. By bonding long-chain fluoroalkyl, the modified polysiloxane presented good thermal stability. Due to the combined effect of the low surface free energy of the perfluorinated side chains and the relatively high surface roughness of the cotton fibers, the treated fabric had favorable hydrophobicity with a WCA of 144.7 • on its surface. In addition, their softness was increased, but the color remained unchanged.

Hydrophobic films were synthesized with a variety of silica particle sizes ranging from 58 to 1428 nm to investigate the effect of particle size on the contact and sliding angles. While the surface roughness created by varying the particle size did not appear to affect water contact angles, the sliding angles showed a significant monotonic decrease, reducing from 908 to 208. IntroductionSelf-cleaning surfaces have developed since the late 20th century and are comprised of two main types, superhydrophobic and superhydrophillic. A surface is generally considered superhydrophobic if it has a water contact angle (WCA) of greater than 1508 and a sliding angle of less than 108. Superhydrophillic surfaces, which attract water, have a WCA of less than 108, thereby resulting in the droplet spreading across the surface quite rapidly. In both cases, the water rolls or slides off the surface at low angle and high velocity, carrying with it dirt and other contaminants, which is the basis of the self-cleaning property. [1] Materials possessing these properties have significant potential from self-cleaning windows to applications on solar panels and the reflective mirrors used in concentrated thermal and photovoltaic (PV) solar plants, whereby vast arrays of mirrors are used. For example, at the Ivanpah solar tower facility in the Mojave Desert in California, 173 500 mirrors are used over an area of 1417 ha.[2] Depending on the nature, size, and density of coverage, dust accumulation can diminish transmittance and/or reflectance at a rate 7 % per month, with every percentage lost thorough scattering or absorption, thus reducing the efficiency of the plant. [3,4] The result is that these systems require almost constant cleaning in regions where water can be scarce and expensive. To be effective on mirrors, PVs, and windows, the superhydrophobic coatings must be transparent and have both thermal and mechanical durability. [5,6] Nature is the primary inspiration for this technology as researchers have investigated the ability of some plants to self-clean via their hydrophobic properties. [7,8] This is best presented by the lotus leaf, such that the self-cleaning phenomenon of superhydrophobicity is referred as the 'Lotus Effect'.
