Preparation of Renewable Bio-Polyols from Two Species of Colliguaja for Rigid Polyurethane Foams

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the potential of two non-edible oil extracts from seeds of Colliguaja integerrima (CIO) and Colliguaja salicifolia (CSO) to use as a renewable source for polyols and, eventually, polyurethane foams or biodiesel. For this purpose, two novel polyols from the aforementioned oils were obtained in a one-single step reaction using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid. The polyol derivatives obtained from the two studied oils were characterized by spectral (FTIR, 1H NMR, and 1… Show more

“…It has been predicted to increase to over 20 million tons in 2020. Therefore, palm oil and its derivatives are a great eco-friendly renewable resource for bio-based polyurethane materials due to their low cost and abundance of supply [ 10 , 15 ]. Palm oil consists of 53.4% saturated and 46.6% unsaturated fatty acids.…”

“…This involved the existence of active functional groups such as hydroxyl of the fatty acid chain. However, the analysis was relatively valid to give important information for an average chemical structure of the whole PU [ 42 ]. In this study, it is noted that some of the glycerol moieties probably did not show any signal during the 1 H NMR analysis, as it is too small compared to the whole chemical structure of the jatropha oil-based PUA.…”

“…This was evidenced by the new peak that was detected in the range from 3.27 to 3.83 ppm. According to Abril-Milán et al, and Ling et al, this peak corresponded to the (–C H –OH) of the hydroxyl group [ 42 , 45 ]. Furthermore, the hydroxyl value (OHV) for JOL was stated as 149.44 ± 0.23 mg KOH/g in the previous work [ 21 ].…”

“…However, it should be taken into account that oil plants can be grown in post-industrial areas where oils cannot be obtained for food purposes. Bio-polyols can also be synthesized from inedible oils such as used cooking oil, tall oil, mustard oil, cashew nut shell liquid, and other sources [117][118][119][120][121].…”
