Preparation of Polyacrylate Hollow Microspheres via Facile Spray Drying

Abstract: Polyacrylate microspheres with a hollow structure were prepared by a facile spray drying method. The effects of spray drying process parameters, including inlet temperature, atomizer rotational speed, and feed speed, on the particle size, bulk density, and morphology of the resultant polyacrylate hollow microspheres were investigated and discussed. The mechanism for the formation of the polyacrylate hollow microspheres was proposed. This facile and scalable method for preparing hollow polymer microspheres is e… Show more

“…The surface area and average pore diameter of CaCO 3 are tabulated in Table 3. As the feeding rate increased, the surface area decreased and pore diameter increased, which is similar to a previous study by Chen et al [43] where hollow microspheres increased as the feeding rate increased. This was probably attributed to the Ostwald ripening process, where larger particles begin to grow and consume the smaller particles due to the difference in concentration gradient [44].…”

“…The spray-dried PHM had better dispersion and stability, and the dried PHM was floating in water after 24 h. This is due to the high temperature flash evaporation at 160°C during the spray drying process, which makes the hydrophilic chains on the surface of the microspheres solidify instantaneously, and the resulting microspheres have better hydrophilicity. 37 Chemical structure analysis of PHM. The FT-IR spectrum of the PHM is shown in Figure 5 (a).…”

“…The micromechanism of the dispersion behavior of polymer-modified rejuvenators in aged asphalt materials is presented by M. Zhao, F. Shen, and Q. Ding. Studies on manufacturing modifiers are also included, such as preparation of polyacrylate hollow microspheres[4] and design of SBS-modified bitumen stabilizer powder based on the vulcanization mechanism[23].…”
