Preparation of platelet-rich plasma: National IADVL PRP taskforce recommendations

Abstract: The goal of these recommendations is to provide a framework to practitioners for implementing useful, evidence-based recommendations for the preparation of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in various dermatological indications. The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) assigned the task of preparing these recommendations to its task force on PRP. A comprehensive literature search was done in the English language on the preparation of PRP across multiple databases. The grade of… Show more

“…Compared to the SC technique, the DC is being the preferred technique for PRP preparation, as shown in a study for dermatologic use, due to its low cost, maximal platelet count, and adequate platelet volume. 20 The recovery efficiencies data measures the effect of the volume of plasma after the centrifugation process. 18 This measurement is part of the limitation of this study.…”

“…7 The double-spin open method is the preferred method of preparation due to its lower cost and better platelet yield as compared to the single-spin method. 8 Nevertheless, the optimal centrifuge parameters have not been concluded yet. 8 A recent comprehensive consensus guideline on knee pain assigned a level 1 recommendation to safety and efficacy of intra-articular PRP for knee pain and improvement in function.…”

“…8 Nevertheless, the optimal centrifuge parameters have not been concluded yet. 8 A recent comprehensive consensus guideline on knee pain assigned a level 1 recommendation to safety and efficacy of intra-articular PRP for knee pain and improvement in function. 3 Studies have shown that improvement for pain and function decline starting at 6 to 9 months post-PRP injection; the optimal frequency of PRP injections remains unclear.…”

“…3 Other treatment options with limited efficacy are imiquimod, oestrogen, misoprostol, interferon-alpha, cryotherapy, CO 2 laser, PRP, and surgical resection. 1,[3][4][5] Due to repeated treatment failures with topical steroids, immunomodulators, and cryotherapy, we opted for PRP to treat the patient. Platelets are a good source of growth factors like platelet-derived growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, vascular endothelial growth factor, and transforming growth factor-beta.6 These growth factors inhibit NF-kB and suppress proinflammatory cytokines like COX-2, and chemokine receptors like CXCR4, thus reducing inflammation.…”
