Porcelain tiles are a building material that has been widely used in recent years and that consumes substantial resources during the sintering process. This study reports on the production of low-temperature porcelain tiles by using low-grade lithium ore (LO) and silica crucible waste (SCW) in a new SiO2–Al2O3–Na2O–K2O–Li2O system. The firing temperature of the porcelain tiles was reduced from 1260 °C to 1070 °C by adding 30% LO instead of feldspar in a modified triaxial ceramic body, and SCW was recycled and used as a raw material. These actions help to reduce the carbon emissions produced during sintering and achieve sustainable development. The effect of phase transitions on the sintering and technological properties of the porcelain tiles was studied by quantitative phase analysis, using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Secondary mullite (0–19%) can be formed at 1040–1100 °C, where more quartz and cristobalite will be retained, which increases the rupture modulus of the porcelain tiles. While the vitreous phase increases rapidly at 1100–1160 °C, the closed pores (0.1–33.1%) will simultaneously expand, causing a decrease in compactness. The results show that low-grade LO (with a cost similar to that of feldspar) allows for the production of porcelain tiles with better process performance at lower temperatures (≤1100 °C).

Abstract-China's coal-fired power plants produce about 600 million tons fly ash annually, which has caused severe economic and environmental problems. This paper first describes briefly the production and utilization status of coal fly ash in China. Then it analyzes the main challenges to the fly ash utilization in China due to the conflict between the huge amount production of fly ash and the depressed consumption of fly ash, as well as the increasing driving forces in the environmental protection. Subsequently, the new developments of fly ash utilization in China, including valuable elements extraction, geopolymer production, fly ash-based ceramics synthesis and soil desertification control are introduced in detail.

In this study, Na 2 CO 3 was used as activator to roast and activate high-alumina fly ash (HAFA), and the vacuum roasting technology was used to enhance the activation process of HAFA. The effects of the vacuum conditions on the activation of HAFA roasted using conventional and microwave heating were investigated. It was determined that the reaction time was shortened and the activation effect of HAFA was improved under vacuum conditions; however, the effect of the vacuum conditions on the roasting temperature was negligible. The activation process of HAFA-Na 2 CO 3 mixtures (HAFA/Na 2 CO 3 mass ratio of 1:1) was promoted by conducting conventional and microwave heating experiments under vacuum (−0.04 MPa). The leaching rate of aluminium of 93.00% was reached at the roasting temperature of 900°C after only 20 min when the HAFA-Na 2 CO 3 mixture was subjected to conventional heating under vacuum, and after 60 min when conventional heating occurred under normal atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the leaching rate of aluminium of 96.00% was reached at the roasting temperature of 700°C after only 20 min when the HAFA-Na 2 CO 3 mixture underwent microwave heating under vacuum, and after 30 min when microwave heating occurred under normal atmospheric pressure.
