Preparation of Micron and Submicron Particles via Spray Drying and Electrostatic Precipitation

Abstract: Small particles are of great interest in a variety of applications. Spray drying is a common technique for particle synthesis, but it is limited with respect to sizes below 10 μm. Therefore, a new laboratory-scale spray dryer was designed to address this issue. A novel aerosol generator consisting of a piezo crystal in a swirl chamber was designed to obtain droplets in the low micrometer range. After drying and cooling, particles were deposited in a molten carrier, using melt electrostatic precipitation. The m… Show more

“…It was chosen based on its UV traceability and high solubility in acetone for high particle mass load in the aerosol. Moreover, celecoxib has a high resistivity of about 4.5 × 10 13 Ωcm [23], which was considered to be particularly challenging in the ESP due to the back corona.…”

“…In the past, solid crystalline suspension showed a fast dissolution of poorly soluble drugs, as well as long-term stability and compatibility of crystalline sugar alcohols with several drugs [ 18 , 29 ]. Different manufacturing methods were presented, such as hot melt extrusion [ 30 , 31 , 32 ], co-milling [ 18 ], melt electrostatic precipitation [ 33 , 34 , 35 ] and melt milling [ 16 ].…”

“…The spray deposition could be used for the fabrication of the CIS photo-absorbing layer instead of the high-cost vacuum-based process. For the combination scheme of electrostatic and ultrasonic atomization, the electric eld is generally introduced in the atomizing area [21], and corona charges [22][23] [24] are used to avoid introducing high-voltage electrostatic charges to the atomization surface and only play a role in beam ow, which has little effect on ultrasonic atomization. This paper presents an electrostatic-assisted ultrasonic spraying experimental device.…”
