Tree root-inspired robust superhydrophobic coatings with high permeation for porous structures

Summary Superhydrophobic coatings have tremendous potential for protecting porous structures from corrosion. However, the weak adhesion and poor abrasion resistance have long been challenges for their real-life applications. Inspired by tree roots, we prepared a robust superhydrophobic coating by spraying fluorinated nanodiamonds (FNDs) on a permeable epoxy coating. The epoxy can not only coat the surface but also permeate deeply inside a porous substrate and consolidate in situ as tree roots in soil. Thus, the structure is thoroughly reinforced where the pull-off strength reaches 9.4 MPa for concrete. On the other hand, the surface is covered with immobilized FNDs, forming a superhydrophobic surface. Thanks to the ultra-hard FNDs, the coating surface has high abrasion resistance and its superhydrophobicity holds even after 100 abrasion cycles. Moreover, it exhibits self-cleaning, anti-icing, and anticorrosion performance. It is promising in protecting various porous structures such as concrete, wood, and untreated corroded steel.

[8] Preparing super-hydrophobic film on metal surface is one of the methods to improve metal corrosion resistance. The main purpose is to use the super-hydrophobic properties of the metal surface to cut back the chance of touching with the corrosive medium in the solution on the metal surface, thereby, the corrosion resistance of the metal surface can be improved. Surfaces with contact angles greater than 150° and roll angles less than 10° are considered super-hydrophobic. [9] In recent years, many researchers have conducted more in-depth research on the properties of super-hydrophobic surfaces. [10][11][12][13] Many excellent physical and chemical properties are shown by superhydrophobic surface, such as, anti-icing, heat transfer, and self-cleaning, [14] but few have been used in the field of metal surface corrosion protection. In order to improve the corrosion resistance of Al alloy, the preparation of super-hydrophobic film on Al alloy surface is considered to be the effective protection method. [5,12] Generally, the two-step method-based Cassie mode contacts were recognized as a classic super-hydrophobic preparation method; the first step is a rough surface structure prepared, and the second step is surface modification. [15] Therefore, the first step is to build a rough structure through anodizing, which can act as an intermediate layer, improve adhesion, and provide an interface for the organic coating. Then, build a composite film layer by self-assembly technology. [7,16] The basic principle of self-assembly technology is realized by chemical adsorption between the solid/liquid interfaces. It forms a monolayer that is oriented and closely at the interface of the two phases. [17] The solid substrate is immersed in the organic solution of the surfactant, and the functional groups of the active agent molecules react with the surface of the substrate material. The film is a compact 2D monomolecular film with a certain orientation, with chemical bonds on the solid surface. Van der Waals forces are formed between molecules. [18] Self-assembly technology has many advantages in real life, such as environmental protection, simple operation, wide practicability, and excellent corrosion resistance. Stable Superhydrophobic Aluminum Surfaces Based on Laser-Fabricated Hierarchical Textures

Laser-microtextured surfaces have gained an increasing interest due to their enormous spectrum of applications and industrial scalability. Direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) and the well-established direct laser writing (DLW) methods are suitable as a powerful combination for the fabrication of single (DLW or DLIP) and multi-scale (DLW+DLIP) textures. In this work, four-beam DLIP and DLW were used independently and combined to produce functional textures on aluminum. The influence of the laser processing parameters, such as the applied laser fluence and the number of pulses, on the resulting topography was analyzed by confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The static long-term and dynamic wettability characteristics of the laser-textured surfaces were determined through water contact angle and hysteresis measurements, revealing superhydrophobic properties with static contact angles up to 163° and hysteresis as low as 9°. The classical Cassie–Baxter and Wenzel models were applied, permitting a deeper understanding of the observed wetting behaviors. Finally, mechanical stability tests revealed that the DLW elements in the multi-scale structure protects the smaller DLIP features under tribological conditions.
