The application of carbon fiber (CF) in carbon fiber composites has faced limitations due to its surface chemical inertness. To overcome this challenge, this study draws inspiration from metal ion‐enhancing exquisite hierarchical and multiphase structures observed in biological materials. The research proposes a novel approach to enhance the interfacial bonding of CF/Epoxy (E‐51) composites by utilizing tannic acid (TA), carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), Fe3+ ions, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). This approach aims to create hydrogen bonding and metal synergistic networks on the surface of CFs through metal ion (Mn+) coordination cross‐linking synergistic (MCCS) interactions. Implementing MCCS strategy resulted in significant improvements in the mechanical properties of the hybrid reinforcements compared to untreated CF composites. The flexural strength, flexural modulus, interlaminar shear strength, and interfacial shear strength experienced respective increase of 50.9%, 72.8% 59.4%, and 61.9%. Moreover, the damping properties of the composites exhibited significant improvements. These positive outcomes can be attributed to the formation of chelation and dense hydrogen bonding networks between TA, Fe3+, CNC, and PVA. Furthermore, CNC and PVA formed cross‐linked nanolayers that effectively deflected cracks and facilitated high energy consumption at the interface. This proposed approach provides a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and efficient method for surface modification in the preparation of high‐performance fiber composites.Highlights Metal ion (Mn+) coordination cross‐linking synergistic strategy is proposed. Tannins/Fe3+/CNCs/PVA form multiphase nanolayers. Metal ion coordination cross‐linking enhances delicate multiphase structures. The prepared carbon fiber composites exhibit excellent properties. The as‐prepared carbon fiber composite has promising applications.

To improve the mechanical performance of carbon fiber (CF)/ epoxy composites in high-temperature environments, a moderately modulus gradient modulus interlayer was constructed at the interface phase region of composites. This involved the design of a "rigid-flexible" synergistic reinforcement structure, incorporating rigid nanoparticle GO@CNTs and a flexible polymer polynaphthyl ether nitrile ketone onto the CF surface. Notably, at 180 °C, compared to commercial CF composites, the CF-GO@CNTs-PPENK composites displayed a remarkable improvement in their mechanical characteristics (interfacial shear, interlaminar shear, flexural strength, and modulus), achieving enhancements of 173.0, 91.5, 225.7, and 376.4%, respectively. The principal reason for this the moderately modulus interface phase composed of GO@CNTs-PPENK (where GO and CNTs predominantly consist of carbon atoms with sp 2 -hybridized orbitals, forming highly stable C−C structures, while PPENK possesses a "twisted non-coplanar" structure), which exhibited resistance to deformation at high temperatures. Moreover, it greatly improved the mechanical interlocking, wettability, and chemical compatibility between CF and the epoxy. It also played a crucial role in balancing and buffering the modulus disparity. The interface failure behavior and reinforcement mechanisms of the CF composites were analyzed. Furthermore, validation of the presence of a moderately modulus gradient interlayer at the interface phase region of CF-GO@CNTs-PPENK composites was performed by using atomic force microscopy. This study has established a theoretical foundation for the development of high-performance CF composites for use in high-temperature fields.

The interface between carbon fiber (CF) and the resin matrix is of paramount importance in determining the overall performance of composite materials. This study employed ammonium ceric nitrate (ACN), sodium alginate (SA), and aminated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to fabricate “hard‐soft‐hard” nanostructure on the surface of CFs with the aim of enhancing the interfacial properties of the composites. The results indicated that interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), interfacial shear strength (IFSS), flexural strength, and modulus of the composites demonstrated a respective increase of 31.0%, 51.8%, 44.3%, and 85.3% following the modification process. The observed positive outcome can be ascribed to the creation of “hard‐soft‐hard” nanostructures achieved by the combination of ACN, SA, and CNTs through both hydrogen and covalent bonding. The nanostructures serve to augment the surface chemical activity of the fibers and amplify the specific surface area, thereby facilitating enhanced mechanical interlocking between the fibers and the resin. Furthermore, the composites of CF prepared through this method demonstrate outstanding mechanical characteristics, rendering them appropriate for the construction of longer‐lasting and more resilient wind turbine blades.Highlights ACN, SA, and CNT create a “hard‐soft‐hard” multi‐phase structure. ACN/SA/CNT synergistically enhances composite interfacial bonding. Inorganic–organic–inorganic materials on CF form novel interfacial phases.
