ResumoOs polímeros de impressão molecular são materiais sintéticos dotados de sítios específicos de reconhecimento. Esses materiais são obtidos por reações de polimerização que fixam, estrategicamente, monômeros funcionais ao redor de uma molécula modelo de acordo com os grupos ligantes e com a estereoquímica de ambas as moléculas. Os MIPs têm sido amplamente empregados em procedimentos de preparo de amostras, como extração e microextração em fase sólida, extração sortiva em barra de agitação, extração com adsorvente magnético, microextração com sorvente empacotado, entre outras. Este artigo de revisão tem como objetivo apresentar o que há de mais recente no emprego de MIP para extração de compostos orgânicos, evidenciando as vantagens de cada aplicação, bem como as mais promissoras tendências que sustentam a evolução e o aperfeiçoamento de cada técnica. These materials are obtained by polymerization reactions that fix the functional monomers around the template molecule according with the binding groups and the stereochemistry of both molecules. The MIPs have been extensively used in several applications with emphasis for sample preparation procedures as solid phase extraction, solid phase microextraction, extraction by magnetic sorbents, microextraction by packed sorbent among others. So, the objective of this review is to present the novelty in MIP use for organic compounds extraction and point out the advantages of each application, as well as what is most promising in the evolution and improvement of each technique.

Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) concerns formation of selective sites in a polymer matrix with the memory of a template. Recently, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have aroused extensive attention and been widely applied in many fields, such as solid-phase extraction, chemical sensors and artificial antibodies owing to their desired selectivity, physical robustness, thermal stability, as well as low cost and easy preparation. With the rapid development of MIT as a research hotspot, it faces a number of challenges, involving biological macromolecule imprinting, heterogeneous binding sites, template leakage, incompatibility with aqueous media, low binding capacity and slow mass transfer, which restricts its applications in various aspects. This critical review briefly reviews the current status of MIT, particular emphasis on significant progresses of novel imprinting methods, some challenges and effective strategies for MIT, and highlighted applications of MIPs. Finally, some significant attempts in further developing MIT are also proposed (236 references).

Technology of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) has become very popular in recent decades. MIPs are primarily used in medical diagnostics, chromatographic separation and solid phase extraction (SPE); also as sensors and catalysts. In recent years there have been reported benefits of combining molecular imprinted polymers with additional features, e.g. magnetic properties, through the build-up of this type of material on magnetite particles (Magnetic Molecularly Imprinted Polymer -MMIP). This method produces a multifunctional material which has high selectivity and the ability to isolate the analyte from biological and environmental samples, allowing effective purification from such interferents as proteins and fats. This developing branch of new materials for the preparation and purification of complex sample matrices is an interesting alternative to materials routinely used to date, particularly with regard to the immunosorbents. This paper summarizes recent reports regarding MMIP preparation and their application for purification and isolation of compounds from biological matrices.
