Preparation of Iron Ore Tailings-Based Superhydrophobic Coatings

Abstract: In this study, ball mill pretreated iron ore tailings were modified with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) to obtain iron ore tailings/polysiloxane (IOT/POS) superhydrophobic powders, which were subsequently mixed with chloroprene rubber solution (CRS) to prepare durable superhydrophobic composite coatings. The effect of HDTMS amount and reaction time on the wettability of the superhydrophobic powder was investigated. The influence of the superhydrophobic powders concentration on t… Show more

“…Surface robustness is a crucial factor for the practical application of slippery surfaces. The surface robustness of SSS-Al was evaluated through lubricant shear, sandpaper wear, and water impact tests, as shown in Figures S5–S7 . In the lubricant shear test, SSS-Al was rotated for about 1 min using a centrifuge (LX-H165A, Hunan Lichen) within a velocity range of 0–8000 rpm.…”

CA and sliding angle (SA) were measured after each test.…”

“…(i) Compared with the overall utilization strategy, the additional value of our product (energy storage devices) was much higher than the product of the overall utilization (building materials, ceramics, and tiles). 2,[4][5][6] The utilization of mining waste for high-value-added energy applications is vitally important in a clean and sustainable society. 28,29 (ii) Compared with the valuable metal recycling strategy (mineral processing, blast furnace smelting, and other beneficiation processes), 7,8 our proposed route was mild, and no complicated mineral processing equipment is required.…”

“…After the research by a large number of researchers, the comprehensive utilization of VTMT is mainly divided into two categories: valuable metal recycling and the overall utilization of tailings. In overall utilization, tailings are mainly used for the preparation of building materials, 4 ceramics, 2 and tiles. 5,6 This method can consume a large amount of VTMT and can effectively solve the problem of tailing inventory, but the added value of the products is not high.…”
