Preparation of Fully Cubic Calcium‐Stabilized Zirconia With 10 mol% Calcium Oxide Dopant Concentration by Microwave Processing

Abstract: A novel, fast, and cheaper method has been developed for the synthesis of fully cubic calcium-stabilized zirconia (ZrO 2 ) of composition Ca 0.1 Zr 0.9 O 1.9 by dissolution of calcium oxide in monoclinic ZrO 2 for the first time using microwave energy. In this process, the precursors have been prepared by the mixedoxide method taking the constituents in their stoichiometric ratio. The samples have been allowed to absorb microwave radiation in the presence of a polymeric susceptor. The susceptor absorbs the mic… Show more

“…The TiO 2 and Y 2 O 3 are microwave susceptors therefore ZrO 2 -Y 2 O 3 -TiO 2 ternary system which in turn absorbs microwave energy results in better diffusion and higher density of YSZ_MW and 5 YZT_MW compared to those of YSZ_CON and 5 YZT_CON. The reason being an additional driving force in microwave processing, apart from the thermal energy 22 . Also the density is increasing with titania content.…”

“…Also, while synthesizing PZT, the use of microwave energy enabled PZT to possess a higher dielectric constant relative to that obtained by the conventional treatment. Faster diffusion caused by the microwave field eventually leads to faster processing at comparable temperature according to 'microwave effect 22 .…”

“…Zirconia doped with other aliovalent metals such as Mg, Ca, or Y is utilized mainly in electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to its high ionic mobility at elevated temperature. Doping of metals with different valences creates oxygen vacancy sites. Oxygen (or oxide) centers will be able to migrate through the vacant sites from the cathode to the anode and in this way create an electric current.…”

“…However, the 3% -5% volume expansion/shrinkage occurs during martensitic transformation, leading to cracks in product cost. However, the method also suffers from disadvantages, including low stability of the produced samples, high heat treatment temperature, and the corresponding high energy consumption [20,21]. Therefore, a preparation method for optimizing the stability of partially stabilised zirconia samples with a short operation time is required.…”
