Preparation of exfoliated montmorillonite nanocomposites with catechol/zwitterionic quaternized polymer for an antifouling coating

Abstract: Here, we report the fabrication of montmorillonite (MMT) to incorporate an antifouling capability using 2‐chloro‐3′, 4′‐dihydroxyacetophenone (CCDP), and 1,3‐propanesultone quaternized poly(dimethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate [(C/S)‐q‐PDMA]. The dispersibility of MMT was improved through an ion exchange reaction between MMT and (C/S)‐q‐PDMA. The developed MMT with (C/S)‐q‐PDMA, consisting of catechol for adhesive properties, and this combination [(C/S)‐q‐PDMA] worked as a zwitterionic surfactants to enhance chai… Show more

“…Polymer or plasticizer can penetrate through nanoclay galleries. 29,30 The distance d 001 of the Na-MMT was found to be 11.69 Å at 2q ¼ 7.56 . In nanoclay containing samples, the intergallery distance increases from 15.55 Å to 17.96 Å by glycerol content.…”

“…At a low filler loading, usually less than 10 wt.%, the reinforcement efficiency of exfoliated silicate platelets as fillers to form polymer-clay nanocomposites can match that of a conventional composite that is usually made using a relatively higher loading (40-50 wt.%) of classical fillers. This improvement is due to the dispersion of the nanoscale fillers into the matrix, which results in a high surface area with high interactions between the nanoclay and the polymer matrix [19][20][21].…”
