Preparation of dextran cryogels for separation processes of binary dye and pesticide mixtures from aqueous solutions

Abstract: We present mechanically strong macroporous, squeezable dextran cryogels as a column filling material for the removal and separation of binary organic dye and pesticide mixtures from aquatic medium. Dextran cryogels were prepared from aqueous solutions of dextran of various molecular weights (MWs) in the presence of 20 to 50 mol% divinyl sulfone (DVS) as a cross‐linker at −18°C. The cryogels have interconnected irregular pores of 100 μm in sizes, and exhibit 69‐84% reversible squeezability without damaging the … Show more

“…Only the materials reported in Reference [ 21 ] show a similar selectivity but with the tradeoff that the material is much more complex. Only very recently a further study has presented MB selective cryogels made from dextran, i.e., the exact inverse of the current materials [ 24 ].…”

“…The same swollen cryogels were reweighed after gently squeezing between two fingers to determine the porosity of the cryogels. The porosity% (P%) of the cryogel samples was calculated using Equation (3) [ 39 ]. S% = [(W s − W d )/W d ] × 100 M% = [(W s − W d )/W s ] × 100 P% = [(W s − W sq )/W s ] × 100 …”

“…The morphology and mechanical properties of the obtained dextran cryogels were tailored by a simple variation of the macromonomer concentration. Ari et al have used DVS for cross-linking non-modified dextran [ 84 ]. An increase of molecular weight of dextran and the concentration of DVS decreases the total pore volume and the swelling of cryogels.…”
