Preparation of bimodal porous copolymer containing β‐cyclodextrin and its inclusion adsorption behavior

Abstract: A novel insoluble bimodal porous polymer containing b-cyclodextrin (b-CD) was prepared to adsorb aromatic amine compound. The process involved copolymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate with a maleic acid derivative of b-CD, subsequently, above formed copolymer was foamed by supercritical CO 2 . The chemical properties and physical structure of obtained copolymer was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectra, Thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and N … Show more

“…As has been reported, water-insoluble β-CD polymers, which are new type of adsorbent, could effectively adsorb organic molecules and heavy metals in aqueous solution. [5][6][7][8] Phenols (phenol and phenolic compounds) are commonly encountered in aqueous effluents from various manufacturing processes, such as oil refineries, coke plants, and phenolic resin plants. 9 It can contain as little as 10 mg/L to greater than 5,000 mg/L of phenol.…”

“…With its hydrophobic cavity, β-CD has great capacity to selectively form inclusion complexes with certain molecules through hostguest interactions (33)(34)(35). Thus, it offers a choice for separating various compounds and provides a useful and versatile tool for protecting the environment (36).…”

“…This material exhibited a strong affinity towards phenol. Sun et al (2010) prepared a novel ␤-CD containing an insoluble bimodal porous polymeric material that adsorbed aromatic amine compounds. However, in these reports, the lack of sufficient functional groups for phenol removal and diffusion limitations within the http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.carbpol.2014.12.011 0144-8617/© 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
