Preparation of aramid-based epoxy resin from low-grade aramid

Abstract: Low-grade aramid fibers are transformed to high value-added aramid-based epoxy resin. Bisphenol-A epoxy resin with aramid-based epoxy resin cured products exhibited improved mechanical properties, outperforming pure E-51 and pure aramid.

“…The design and synthesis of the polymer phase have also been investigated as a way to tailor composite performance. This is a particularly useful approach when the reinforcement phase is difficult/impossible to chemically modify (e.g., aramid fibers, 19 ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers 20 ).…”

“…The design and synthesis of the polymer phase have also been investigated as a way to tailor composite performance. This is a particularly useful approach when the reinforcement phase is difficult/impossible to chemically modify (e.g., aramid fibers, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers). For example, rubber modifiers or bimodal blends can be used to toughen polymer networks. Additionally, there have been sustained efforts in producing bio-based thermosetting polymers that maintain the performance of traditional commercial thermosets. , Bio-based systems can also provide additional functionality, such as remendability in the case of furan-based networks. Polymers can also be modified with silanes.…”

“…Impact strength tests are commonly used to evaluate the amount of energy absorbed by materials before fracturing using the Charpy or Izod configurations [4,[67][68][69][70]. In previous Charpy impact results [52], the energy absorbed was inversely proportional to the number of curaua non-woven mat layers.…”

“…1,2 Amongst them, aramid fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (AF/EP) are developed to meet different industrial requirements. 3 However, the intrinsic flammability of EP has become a key factor that restricts its further application, and also brings about fire risk for AF/EP composites due to the wick effect, in which the heat and fuel are produced and transferred along the fiber direction to continuously feed the fire. [4][5][6][7] In most cases, the flame retardancy of EP was improved, which was always accompanied by the deterioration of mechanical properties due to the negative interaction between EP and flame retardants.…”
