Preparation of a Ytterbium‐tagged Gunshot Residue Standard for Quality Control in the Forensic Analysis of GSR

Abstract: Preparation of a ytterbium-tagged gunshot residue (GSR) reference standard for scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (SEM-EDS) microanalysis is reported. Two different chemical markers, ytterbium and neodymium, were evaluated by spiking the primers of 38 Special ammunition cartridges (no propellant, no projectile) and discharging them onto 12.7 mm diameter aluminum SEM pin stubs. Following SEM-EDS microanalysis, the majority of tri-component particles containing lead, barium, a… Show more

“…Certified reference materials for IGSR analysis are currently only available for SEM-EDS analysis. 20,44 With the creation of newly characterized IGSR standards, alternate methods of analysis such as spICP-TOFMS are now available to be validated for IGSR detection. By using these reference suspensions, we examined the particle populations originating from two ammunition primers: one leaded (Winchester) and one lead-free (Inceptor).…”

“…In 2015, Hearns et al (2015) added ytterbium and neodymium nitrates in the primer of conventional ammunition to provide traceability to a GSR reference standard to be used as positive control by the Trace Evidence Services of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. And, recently, Gd and Ga were added to NTA used by some European police forces (Polovkov a et al, 2015).…”

“…There are many studies have been obtained in the literature comparing the benefits and disadvantages of shot residue analysis methods (Matricardi and Kilty, 1977;Brozek-Mucha and Jankowicz, 2001;Taudte et al, 2014;Ali et al, 2016;Shrivastava et al, 2021). GFAAS, which has advantages such as cost, sensitivity, and quick analysis findings, and SEM, which has advantages such as analyzing the elemental composition of the particles and studying their morphological properties, are two procedures that are often employed (Chang et al, 2013;Hearns et al, 2015;Kara and Yalçinkaya, 2017;Bender et al, 2021;Caccia et al, 2021). Especially the analysis of Sb, Ba and Pb in the GSR can be obtained with high accuracy and precision by GFAAS and SEM-EDS.…”
