Preparation of a Novel Adsorbent and Heavy Metal Ion Adsorption

Abstract: The article focuses on the preparation of a novel adsorbent by grafting amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer to cotton fibers and the adsorption of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. The prepared novel adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results show that the amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer was grafted to the oxidized cotton fibers, and the adsorbent with amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer was … Show more

“…Hyperbranched polymers, such as hyperbranched poly(ethylene imine), hyperbranched polyamide amine, and hyperbranched polyester, have shown efficiently to entrap heavy metal ions and organic molecules in their interior. [19][20][21][22][23] Amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (NH 2 -HBP) have abundant functional groups to be used in the dyeing as an auxiliary. 24 Beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a torus-shaped cyclic oligosaccharide made up of seven α-1,4-linked-d-glucopyranose units.…”

“…In a second stage, the filter is a hollow polypropylene cylinder filled with cotton fibers as absorbent of microand nanoparticles and chemical agents (Figure 1). This material offers the following advantages: (i) high rate retention of solids in collected water samples; (ii) capacity of being functionalized for selective retention of heavy metals; 26 (iii) no retention of arsenic (when the cotton fibers are not activated); (iv) low cost; (v) easy operation; and (vi) degradability.…”

“…Cotton fiber (CF) was preprocessed using sodium hydroxide according to previous studies [20,21] in order to decrease the crystallinity. The preprocessed cotton fiber was then oxidized with sodium periodate solution (2 wt.%), with a bath ratio of 1:50, at 70℃, for 2 hours, washed with deionized water several times to remove the oxidant, and dried in vacuum oven.…”
