Preparation for colonoscopy: types of scales and cleaning products

Abstract: Adequate bowel preparation is essential before a colonoscopy, allowing us to make a proper examination of the entire mucosa. The ideal method of colon cleansing should be fast, safe, and get a proper cleaning with minimal discomfort for the patient. Today we have a wide variety of colon cleansing products, information sometimes becomes confused. A good colon preparation depends partly on correct choice of the same, but also upon dietary restriction. Knowledge of all these products, with their advantages and li… Show more

“…1) based on the proportion of fluid and remnant stool [13]. Excellent was defined as the presence of a small volume of clear liquid or visualization of greater than 95% of the surface, good as a large volume of clear liquid covering 5% to 25% of the surface but visualization of greater than 90% of the surface, fair as the presence of some semisolid stool that could be suctioned or washed away but visualization of greater than 90% of the surface, poor as the presence of semisolid stool that could not be suctioned or washed away and visualization of less than 90% of the surface, and inadequate as solid stool that impeded visualization, requiring repeat preparation and colonoscopy.…”

“…Aronchick scale. The Aronchick scale [15] was classified in the following manner: excellent (>95% of the mucosa visualized, small amount of clear liquid); good (>90% of the mucosa visualized, large volume of clear liquid covering 5-25% of surface); fair (>90% of the mucosa visualized, some semisolid stool that could be suctioned or washed away); poor (<90% of the mucosa visualized, semisolid stool that could not be suctioned or washed away); or inadequate (repreparation required, large amount of faecal residue precluded a complete examination).…”

“…An effective method of bowel cleansing that will ensure patient compliance should improve the effectiveness of the examination and minimize the risk of procedural complications [19] . The ideal method of colon cleansing should be fast and safe, and provide proper cleaning with minimal discomfort for the patient [16] . Inadequate bowel preparation for colonoscopy can lead to missed lesions, cancellation of the procedure, increased procedural time, and possibly increased complication rate [18] .…”

“…This scale grades using semi-quantitative descriptors: (1) Excellent: Small volume of clear liquid or >95% of the surface is seen; (2) Good: Large volume of clear liquid covering 5-25% of the surface, but >90% of the surface is seen; (3) Fair: Some semisolid stool that could be suctioned or washed away, but >90% of the surface is seen; (4) Poor: Semisolid stool that could not be suctioned or washed away and <90% of the surface seen; (5) Inadequate: Solid stool that impedes vision. Repeat preparation and colonoscopy are needed [15,16] .…”
