Preparation and thermoelectric properties of some phosphide skutterudite compounds

Abstract: Thermoelectric properties of CoP 3 and CeFe 4 P 12 have been measured. These compounds were synthesized by a flux technique using Sn as the solvent. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffractometry and electron microprobe analyses. The Seebeck coefficient, the electrical resistivity, the Hall effect, and the thermal conductivity were measured over a wide range of temperatures. The results indicate that CoP 3 and CeFe 4 P 12 are semiconductors, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The thermal conduc… Show more

“…Samples of CoP 3 and LaFe 4 P 12 were synthesized using a tin-flux technique, 25 while the CoAs 3 , CoSb 3 , and NiP 3 were synthesized by direct reaction of the constituent elements in sealed and evacuated silica tubes. Thin areas for TEM studies were obtained by crushing the samples in an agate mortar and then deposited on a carbon film suspended on a copper grid.…”

“…23,24 In the present study, we reveal a potential class of highperformance TE materials with enhanced electrical properties from this screening: metal phosphides (MPs). Although MPs are known to be stable and have excellent electronic properties [25][26][27][28] and therefore are of interest for PV/optoelectronics, 29 they are less frequently considered as potential TEs due to their expected high thermal conductivity. For instance, phosphide skutterudites (e.g.…”

[3][4][5] To be a useful thermoelectric material, it must have a large thermoelectric figure of merit, defined as ZT ¼ a 2 T=qk, where a is the Seebeck coefficient, q is the electrical resistivity, k is the thermal conductivity, and T is the absolute temperature. Relatively large ZT values, around 2.5 at room temperature, have been obtained for nanostructured thermoelectric materials.…”
