Over the last decades, microwave heating has experienced a great development and reached various domains of application, especially in material processing. In the field of polymers, this unusual source of energy showed important advantages arising from the direct microwave/matter interaction. Indeed, microwave heating allows regio-, chemio-, and stereo-selectivity, faster chemical reactions, and higher yields even in solvent-free processes. Thus, this heating mode provides a good alternative to the conventional heating by reducing time and energy consumption, hence reducing the costs and ecological impact of polymer chemistry and processing. This review states some achievements in the use of microwaves as energy source during the synthesis and transformation of polymers. Both in-solution and free-solvent processes are described at different scales, with comparison between microwave and conventional heating.

Among the chemical methods in the liquid phase, the sol–gel technique is a versatile and efficient method for pure or doped metal oxide films or powders preparation, showing some advantages over other preparation techniques (high homogeneity, the possibility to introducing dopants in large amount, low processing temperature and control over the stoichiometry). Combining the sol–gel (SG)method with the effect of ultrasounds(US) or microwaves (MW) leads to improving the sol–gel procedure. The microwave-assisted sol–gel method is most frequently used for obtaining nanocrystalline, monodispersed oxide nanoparticles, or to transform amorphous gels into well-crystallized nanopowders. Less studied is the influence of the microwaves on the sol–gel reactions in solutions. The benefit of using microwave-assisted sol–gel preparation highly depends on the reagents used and on the composition of the studied systems. In the present chapter, results on the influence of the microwaves on the chemical reactions that take place during the sol–gel synthesis and on the properties of the resulted samples are discussed.

Electrochromic devices are actuation elements of smart windows and allow saving the energy needed to cool the premises. Electrochemical deposition can significantly reduce the cost of electrochromic deposition. This paper discusses an electrochemical method of deposition based on nickel hydroxide from an electrolyte containing nickel nitrate and polyvinylpyrralidone (PVP). The electrochromic films were obtained in a galvanostatic mode at different PVP concentrations. As a result of the studies, it has been shown that the presence of PVP in the deposition electrolyte significantly affects the properties of the resulting electrochromic films. Moreover, the properties of the resulting films strongly depend on the used PVP concentration. Thus, at low concentrations, the addition of PVP causes an improvement in electrochromic and electrochemical characteristics, including stability in the properties of films. While at high concentrations of PVP, the electrochemical and electrochromic characteristics deteriorate significantly up to their almost complete disappearance. The paper proposes a possible mechanism that explains the improvement in the characteristics of the films obtained from the solutions with low PVP concentrations. This mechanism consists in improving the wettability of the substrate, increasing the contact area of the deposit with the substrate and, as a consequence, improving the adhesion and a decrease in the contact resistance at the conductive oxide-Ni(OH) 2 film boundary. Also, the work has found the range of optimal PVP concentrations for an electrolyte containing 0.1 М Ni(NO 3) 2 , which is 0.
