Preparation and stability testing of a hydrogel for topical analgesia

Abstract: With the commercial availability of a cream (EMLA) containing a eutectic mixture of local anaesthetics, 2.5% (w/w) lidocaine and 2.5% (w/w) prilocaine, effective topical anaesthesia of the intact skin is possible without the need for subcutaneous injections or exposure to high concentrations of local anaesthetics. In our hospital a topical anaesthetic product was designed for the same purpose. The home-made product contains a eutectic mixture of a local anaesthetic (5% w/w) and l-menthol (1% w/w). Prilocaine w… Show more

“…Highly monodisperse hydrogel microbeads have many important applications in pharmacy (Nortier et al 1995), food coatings (Sanguansri et al 2006) and biomedical industries such as cell encapsulation (Jen et al 1996;Luca et al 2007) and drug delivery systems (Graham and Mcneill 1984). In cell encapsulation for tissue engineering and cell-based beads array systems, micro-sized monodisperse hydrogel beads are in demand since they facilitate handling and allow rapid exchange of nutrients into and waste out of these beads.…”

“…Ultimately, a very short clinically insignificant pain relief [10] is obtained following topical application. To overcome this problem of retaining the drug on the mucosa for a desired length of time, and to achieve adequate anesthesia [11], 5% lignocaine and bupivacaine gels were made with carbopol [12] which increases the mucoadhesion and helps in the stability of the mixture for longer period of time.…”

“…Transdermal anaesthesia is of potential benefit postoperatively, particularly in paediatric and elderly patients. Transdermal anaesthetic agents are available as a patch, film, gel, or cream [1][2][3].…”

“…Transdermal anaesthesia has been used for more than three decades in children following invasive procedures [1][2][3]. Transdermal anaesthetics must have a rapid onset of action with good efficacy at a low cost.…”
