Preparation and properties of phase‐change heat‐storage UV curable polyurethane acrylate coating

Abstract: Phase-change heat-storage UV curable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) coating was prepared by applying microencapsulated phase change materials (microPCMs) to PUA coating. MicroPCMs containing paraffin core with melamine-formaldehyde shell were synthesized by in situ polymerization. The effect of stirring speed, emulsification time, emulsifier amount, and core/shell mass ratio on particle size, morphology, and phase change properties of the microPCMs was studied by using laser particle size analyzer, Fourier transf… Show more

“…In summary, the system of first order ordinary differential equations, i.e., state variable equations, solved during the cooling season is composed of Equations (6), (8), and (10). Conversely, the state variable equations solved during the heating season are composed of Equations (7), (9), and (11).…”

“…Researchers such as Madhumathi et al [5] and Zhu et al [6] investigated the use of phase change materials to improve energy consumption due to climate control in dwellings located in hot environments. Similarly, Tan et al [7] and Shi et al [8] investigated the use of phase change coatings for heat management. In the early 60s, increased capacitance was part of a solar building plan through the study of geodesic domes [9,10].…”

“…[ 33,34 ] 2) Reactivity of PCMs component is not high enough, so photo or thermal initiating, high temperature curing, or post‐treatment is inevitable. [ 35 ] For example, Tan et al. [ 36 ] prepared paraffin/high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) phase‐change coatings on Al substrates via spray technique, but considerable amount of polyurethane and curing agent were used since paraffin/HDPE composite powder could not self‐cross‐link.…”

“…In terms of PUAs, PUAs have a wide range of applications such as painting, coatings, adhesives, foams, textiles, membranes, packaging overcoat films, and biomedical materials, especially for oligomers. The wide application originates from its unique properties, including high solution, low melting viscosity, and three‐dimensional architectures . On one hand, UV‐curable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) represents a major trend due to concern about environmental impacts and low energy consumption; however, one major drawback is their polymerization shrinkage, which would lead to failure and shorten service life of photopolymerization materials .…”
