Preparation and properties of nonionic waterborne epoxy resin

Abstract: Most waterborne epoxy resin emulsifiers are inactive, and the free emulsifier will precipitate out during the curing of the coating film, which will seriously affect the water resistance, solvent resistance, and hardness of the coating film.Herein we prepared a new type of nonionic active epoxy emulsifier. First, 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether reacts with polyethylene glycol at a higher temperature to form an epoxy-terminated modified hydrophilic segment. Then 2,4-toluene diisocyanate link the hydrophilic seg… Show more

“…39 In this regard, the emulsification temperature of emulsifiers must be lower than their CP values to prevent phase separation. 19 The increased CP values of all WEP emulsifiers with increasing PEG molecular weights indicate that high contents of polyoxyethylene chains in PEG provide high affinity to H 2 O, thus maintaining the WEP emulsifier stability over a broad temperature range (Figure 2d). 40 The high CP value of E-PEG4000 (81.7 °C) from the other side indicates that this emulsifier can be used over a broad temperature range.…”

“…Epoxy resin is a kind of polymers whose main chains are constructed by the aliphatic and/or aromatic chain segments, in which the molecule contains two or more epoxy groups 1–3 . Benefiting from strong adhesion, stability, good chemical resistance and other excellent characteristics, epoxy resin has been widely used to prepare coatings 4–6 . Epoxy‐based coatings can be applied in different fields, including automobiles, 7 containers, 8 equipment, 9 civil engineering, 10 ships, 11 electronic components, 12 and so forth.…”

“…Commercial toughening agents include chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), core‐shell structure acrylic impact modifier (ACR), and so forth, which have been extensively reported in the literature 11–15 . In previous works, 16,17 polycarbonate‐polydimethylsiloxane block copolymer (PC‐ b ‐PDMS) was used as a new toughening agent to toughen PVC and its comparison with other toughening agents was investigated. It was found that PC‐ b ‐PDMS has a good toughening effect on PVC, and the toughness can be increased up to 42 times (Izod notch impact strength 117.38 kJ/m 2 ) at room temperature.…”
