Preparation and Properties of Cationic Gelatin Cross-Linked with Tannin

Abstract: A kind of biomaterial with antibacterial and mechanical properties was prepared using gelatin (GE) as a raw material. GE was modified by antibacterial epoxy quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) and then cross-linked with tannic acid (TA). Analysis of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that the cationic group was grafted onto GE by reaction of the amino of GE with the epoxy of QAS, and the cross-linking occurred between the amino of GE and the active groups of TA under alkaline conditio… Show more

“…For PET-Gel and PET-Gel-S, the first thermal weight loss in the temperature range of 50–150 °C was mainly related to the evaporation of moisture. The second stage of mass loss between 200 and 500 °C was associated with the decomposition of gelatin and PET chains …”

“…The crystallinity of PET-PDA-S was higher than that of PET-PDA (Table S2), indicating that, in addition to thermal treatment, autoclaving further improved the crystallization of the materials. The PET-Gel and PET-Gel-S curves exhibited one large endothermic peak between 50 and 100 °C, reflecting the evaporation of water absorbed by gelatin 36 and helix−coil transition of collagenous materials. 37 Regarding the crystallinity, the presence of gelatin in PET-Gel reduced the value.…”

“…Tannin is an abundant natural biomass that contains multiple adjacent phenolic. presented widely in the leaves, trees, skins and fruits of plants, [1] which has unique chemical properties and pharmacological activity, such as capturing of free radical, [2] binding ability to proteins, alkaloids and certain polysaccharides, [3] and antibacterial activity. [4] Therefore, tannin has important application value in some fields involving food, [5] pharmacy, [6] daily chemical industry.…”
