Preparation and properties of an efficient smoke suppressant and flame‐retardant agent for thermoplastic polyurethane

Abstract: APP@ETA, as a new type of flame retardant, was prepared by chemically modifying ammonium polyphosphate (APP) with ethanolamine (ETA) and applied to thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) in this study. Then, the smoke suppression properties and flame‐retardant effects of APP@ETA in TPU composites were evaluated using smoke density test, cone calorimeter test, etc. And, the thermal degradation properties of flame‐retardant TPU composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry. The smoke… Show more

“…TG is the most favored technique for evaluations the thermal stability of various polymers. 28 Figure 9 shows the TG and derivative ther- It was easily to come to a conclusion that CS could promote TPU decomposition in advance. It could be seen in the curve of DTG that the decomposition rate of the sample containing 2.0-wt% CS was decreased at about 375 C, much lower than that of TPU.…”

“…Figure showed the mass loss curves of TPU composites in the CCT. The mass loss could be used to evaluate the char forming property, which was related to the behavior of heat release and smoke suppression . It could be seen from Figure that the differences between pure TPU and TPU composites were not obvious at the beginning of the combustion progress.…”

“…The mass loss could be used to evaluate the char forming property, which was related to the behavior of heat release and smoke suppression. 30 It could be seen from Figure 9 residual mass of TPU/PMDA-1, TPU/PMDA-2 TPU/PMDA-3, and TPU/PMDA-4 was 10%, 12%, 15%, and 20% at the end of combustion. Obviously, the addition of PMDA could slow down the mass loss rate and promoted the char forming in the combustion process of TPU composites.…”

“…Polyurethane elastomer (PUE) is mainly composed of hard and soft segments, and the soft segments are usually polyols, while the hard segments are generally isocyanates and chain extenders. Because of its excellent elasticity, radiation resistance, abrasion resistance, and low temperature resistance, PUE is widely used in many industries, such as mining, machinery, construction, and auto‐making . But PUE is easy to burn in air and produces toxic gases, such as HCN and CO, which can cause serious harm to human health and the environment.…”
