Preparation and Performance Test of the Super-Hydrophobic Polyurethane Coating Based on Waste Cooking Oil

Abstract: In order to solve the problem of dust accumulation on the fin surface of a mine air cooler, a method of preparing super-hydrophobic polyurethane (SPU) coating based on waste cooking oil (WCO) was proposed. Firstly, the polyurethane prepolymer was synthesized with WCO as a raw material, and then the polyurethane prepolymer was modified with amino-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (ATP) to obtain SPU emulsion. The chemical structure and thermal stability of SPU were characterized by infrared spectrum and thermogra… Show more

“…Inspired by the unique water repelling nature of lotus leaves, superhydrophobic surfaces have been extensively explored for various potential applications, such as anti-fogging, antiicing, anti-corrosion, oil/water separation, self-cleaning and anti-contamination, etc. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Superhydrophobic surface has a water contact angle (WCA) higher than 150 • and a water rolling angle less than 10 • .…”

“…Polyurethane can be classified into waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and solvent-based polyurethane (SPU), based on the dispersion media. WPU and SPU have many comparable properties, such as high tensile strength, high abrasion resistance, high flexibility, good adhesion and good low-temperature resistance [ 1 , 2 ]. The difference between WPU and SPU is that the production and use of WPU does not release a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOC), which is an inevitable problem in the production and use of SPU [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…Y. Cheng et alattempted to address the problem of dust accumulation on the fin surface of a mine air cooler, prepared a superhydrophobic polyurethane (SPU) emulsion from a polyurethane prepolymer made from raw-material waste cooking oil (WCO), modified the emulsion with polydimethylsiloxane and terminated amino polymer (ATP) and developed multiple nanocomposites by incorporating SPU emulsions with modified silicone carbide (APT-SiC) particles; contact and sliding angles, pull-off strength and thermal conductivity were considered with a modified filler ratio in nanocomposites; the researchers produced a superhydrophobic (polyurethane) coating with an APT-SiC particle concentration of 20% by weight; the obtained coating demonstrated high pull-off strength and excellent heat conductivity with a contact angle of 161° [16].…”
