Preparation and Evaluation of Microemulsion Containing Clove Oil and Peppermint Oil as Active Compound

Abstract: Microemulsion are one of the potential and emerging drug carrier systems that helps to improve drug release and enhance the bioavailability of poorly aqueous soluble drugs. This study was designed to formulate and evaluate microemulsion containing clove oil and peppermint oil. Microemulsion was prepared using tween 80 as a surfactant and ethanol as a co-surfactant. The microemulsion formulation characterized for its particle size, viscosity, conductivity, pH, zeta potential and stability. The mean droplet size… Show more

“…Both ethanol and isopropanol provided CM with a particle size of less than 100 nm, of which the sizes were in the range of 10.24-62.44 and 8.81-77.56 nm, respectively. The particle size of less than 100 nm was also reported in CM formulations containing Tween 80isopropanol [6, 7], Tween 80-polyethylene glycol 400 [8] and Tween 80-ethanol [7,9] as surfactant systems. The PDI values of all preparations were less than 0.5; the values of more than 0.7 represent the broad size distribution of particles [13].…”

“…The mixture of surfactant (Tween 20) and co-surfactants (ethanol or isopropanol) at SR of 1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:2 were used to develop the phase diagram. The phase diagram was constructed using water titration technique [9]. Clove oil and SM were mixed at various weight ratios (0:10, 1:9, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6, 5:5, 6:4, 7:3, 8:2, 9:1 and 10:0).…”
