Summary
The dose equivalent rate from a nuclear pacer was determined in a previous paper10 through direct measurements of the gamma contribution, and through calculations of the neutron contribution which make use of computer simulation work done at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The resulting annual dose equivalent has been shown to be a level generally acceptable to adult individuals exposed for less pressing reasons than long‐term cardiac pacing, in a comparison with the maximum permissible dose (MPD). Other guide lines have been applied elsewhere, but are largely inappropriate. The MPD is a level expected to produce a vanishingly small risk for exposed individuals.
