Polyaspartic acid (PASP) is a biodegradable green material with carboxyl groups ( COOH) and amido groups ( CO NH ). In the article, a novel urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin modified by PASP and Ca-montmorillonite (Ca-Mt) was prepared by the alkalineacid-alkaline method. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis (TG-DTG), and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of viscosity, curing time, and free formaldehyde were investigated. The results showed that the layered structure of Ca-Mt was exfoliated and dispersed in the bulk of UF. The thermal stability of the modified UF was much better than that of pure UF resin. The percentage of free formaldehyde was declined from 26 to 18%. Meanwhile, the UF composites showed the short curing time and the optimum viscosity. Finally, a synthetic process of UF modified by PASP and Ca-Mt and a possible mechanism for immobilizing the free formaldehyde were suggested.

Synthesis of Lignin-Based Polyacid Catalyst and Its Utilization to Improve Water Resistance of Urea–formaldehyde Resins

In this study, a lignin-based polyacid catalyst was synthesized via two steps to enhance water resistance of urea–formaldehyde (UF) resins. The first steps involved a hydroxymethylation reaction to increase the hydroxyl content in lignin. Then, hydroxymethylated lignins were reacted with maleic anhydride to form maleated lignin-based polyacids. The acid groups were expected to function as acid catalysts to catalyze the curing process of UF resin. In order to elucidate the structural variation, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylpropane as a typical guaiacol lignin structural unit was used as a model compound to observe the hydroxymethylation and the reaction with maleic anhydride analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR. After the structural analysis of synthesized lignin-based polyacid by FTIR and 13C NMR, it was used to produce UF resin as an adhesive in plywood and medium density fiberboard (MDF) production, respectively. The results showed that when the addition of lignin-based polyacid was 5% in plywood, it could effectively improve the water resistance of UF resins as compared to commercial additive NH4Cl. It also exhibited a lower formaldehyde emission. Like plywood, lignin-based catalysts used in medium density fiberboard production could not only maintain the mechanical properties, but also inhibit the water adsorption of fiberboards.

Abstract-Microcapsules of single-shell melamine-formaldehyde (MF) and double-shell urea-formaldehyde/melamine -formaldehyde (UF/MF) microcapsules loading with fragrance of varied concentrations were prepared using in situ polymerization. The microcapsules were analyzed using Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). Loading capacity of fragrance in the microcapsules in term of percent weight of fragrance was determined using soxhlet extraction. From SEM images, shapes and sizes of single shell MF microcapsules were different depending on concentrations of fragrance and SDS added in the preparation procedure. FT-IR spectra of double-shell UF/MF microcapsules loaded fragrance presented absorption band of C=O at 1674 cm -1 as found in that of fragrance. Percent weight of fragrance in single-shell UF and double-shell UF/MF microcapsules substantially increased with increased concentration of fragrance. Additionally, loading capacity of fragrance in double-shell UF/MF microcapsules were higher than those in single-shell MF microcapsules at the same concentration of fragrance. This would lead to higher prolongation of fragrance release from double-shell UF/MF microcapsules than single-shell MF microcapsules and fulfill the end use applications.
