Preparation and characterization of two types of separate collagen nanofibers with different widths using aqueous counter collision as a gentle top-down process

Abstract: Two types of single collagen nanofibers with different widths were successfully prepared from native collagen fibrils using aqueous counter collision (ACC) as a top-down process. A mild collision of an aqueous suspension at a 100 MPa ejection pressure yielded nanofibers, termed CNF100, which have an inherent axial periodicity and are ∼100 nm in width and ∼10 μm in length. In contrast, ACC treatment at 200 MPa provided a non-periodic, shorter and thinner nanofiber, termed CNF10, that was ∼10 nm in width and ∼5 … Show more

“…Recently, a novel method to pulverize hierarchically organized bio-based materials into nano-objects using only the collision energy of dual water jets was invented by Kondo et al [71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79]. This technique termed "aqueous counter collision" (ACC) successfully dissociates the weaker intermolecular interactions such as van der Waals forces in bio-based materials without any chemical modification.…”

“…A drastic decrease in fiber width then occurs, presumably due to the cleavage of weak hydrogen bonds between crystalline domains of CNFs. Accordingly, ACC nanopulverization is considered to be an effective synergistic process that generates shear stress and propagating shock waves in various biomass resources (Kose and Kondo, 2011b;Kondo et al, 2014b;Jiang et al, 2016;Tsujita and Kondo, 2019;Ye et al, 2021).…”

“…31,32 The aqueous counter collision (ACC) method 33,34 has been proposed as a unique physicochemical approach to nanopulverize bio-based materials. 35,36 ACC relies on the impingement of a pair of high-speed water jets for the aqueous suspension of raw materials. 34,37 Typically, the 200 MPa ejection pressure generates a supersonic flow of dual water jets at Mach 2.…”
