Preparation and Characterization of Superabsorbent Polymers Based on Sawdust

Abstract: Sawdust, a cheap by-product of the timber and forestry industry, was considered as a framework structure to prepare superabsorbent polymer with acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM), the synthetic monomers. The effects of initiator content, crosslinker content, AA content, AM content, degree of neutralization of AA, and reaction temperature on the swelling rate of superabsorbent polymer were investigated. The synthesized polymer was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffrac… Show more

“…The latter reduces the charge density in the in the network and with it the chain stiffness. Such copolymers have been reported to show increased degrees of swelling and to be less prone to saline media [ 34 , 35 ]. This preferable performance was already shown in the round-robin test [ 25 ].…”

“…Although, the absorbed functional groups were captured to almost the same frequencies, however, slight variation in the intensity of the peaks were observed which could be due to the interaction between the absorbing species i.e., the weak bands due to p(HEA‐AAm) were intensified upon the introduction of the metal to form p(HEA‐AAm)/WO 3 and p(HEA‐AAm)/b‐WO 3 hydrogels. According to the spectra, the hydrogels revealed a broad ‐OH peak, and a sharp ‐NH peak that overlapped before 3438 cm −1 52 . However, the sharp peaks appearing at 1662 and 1420 cm −1 are attributed to C═O and H bending vibrational frequencies of amide.…”

“…Thus, SAPs are employed for a multitude of applications. Commercial production of SAPs began in 1978 for use in feminine napkins and further employing in baby diapers [3], agriculture [4] and commodity products [5]. Currently, the uses of SAP for biomedical purposes such as wound healing and drug carrier are the main goal of their applications [6].…”

“…The market for the PAs is predicted to continually grow as a result of rise of global population and changes in human lifestyle [8]. As the use of PA disposable items has increased, environmental problems related to the waste disposal have been concerned and needed prompt remedies [5].…”
