Preparation and Characterization of Some Novel Bismaleimide Monomers and Polymers Based on Diaminobisimides

Abstract: New bismaleimide monomers, based on pure diaminobismides (DABIs) have been synthesized. In a number of cases the bismaleimide of the 2:1 (amine/anhydride) DABI adduct has been isolated as a pure compound, but where the starting DABI consisted of a mix of imide oligomers of the diamine and dianhydride (2:1, 3:2 and higher) the corresponding bismaleimide product was found also to have a similar composition ratio. This has been confirmed in one example by separation of the oligomer mix and characterization of the… Show more

“…Many researchers have attempted to overcome the brittle nature of BMI via modification of its chemical structure by adding other chemical groups [12][13][14][15]. Another successful approach is the use of chain-extended high-molecularweight prepolymers prepared by the Michael addition reaction of BMIs and diamine [16][17][18][19][20][21].…”

“…In addition, polar carbonyl groups cause chain stacking, making energy dissipation difficult and the thermosets prone to fracture. [ 58 ] Matrimid 5292 is the current benchmark BMI/polyimide system and represents the second‐generation class of “toughened” BMIs with superior physical properties. Produced by Ciba Geigy and Huntsman, it consists of a combination of 4,4′‐bismaleimidodiphenyl methane (BDM) and diallylbisphenol A (DABA) ( Figure ).…”

“…The high degree of crosslinking is responsible for the excellent elevated temperature performance of these materials, however it is also the reason behind the biggest drawback associated with BMIs: the cured polymers are brittle, with low fracture toughness. While this is also the case for many other thermosets, such as multifunctional epoxies, the issue is exacerbated in BMIs by the presence of polar carbonyl groups, which leads to ordered stacking of the polymer chains and less opportunity for energy dissipation [13]. Consequently, the drive to reduce the inherent brittleness of BMIs features strongly in many published research studies.…”
