Preparation and characterization of sodium polyacrylate-grafted bentonite and its performance removing Pb2+from aqueous solutions

Abstract: A new adsorbent, sodium polyacrylate (PAANa) grafted onto the surface of bentonite (Bent), was successfully synthesized by a facile and green Ce(iv)-redox process, to remove Pb2+ from aqueous solutions.

“…The FT‐IR spectra of physically cross‐linked cellulose shows obvious absorption peak at 3430 cm −1 , which is assigned to OH stretching. The peaks at around 1160 and 1023 cm −1 are attributed to asymmetric stretching vibration of COC glycoside and CO stretching in the COH stretching, respectively, while the peak at 895 cm −1 is related to COC bridge. Compared with those in the spectra of pure PANa and cellulose hydrogel, the intensity of these absorption peaks (3000–3600 cm −1 ) in the spectra of PANa‐cellulose hydrogel significantly decreased while other peaks kept similar intensity, indicating that the hydroxyl group on the cellulose chains partially reacted with PANa chains to form covalent cross‐linkers .…”

“…GO was prepared based on Hummers' method [35,38]. Graphite flakes (0.6 g) and sodium nitrate (1 g) were added slowly into concentrated sulfuric acid (35 mL), maintaining the temperature of the ice water bath between 0 and 4 • C. Then, the potassium permanganate was added to the solution very slowly, while simultaneously maintaining the temperature at no more than 20 • C. Next, the solution was put into a water bath of 35 • C, with stirring, for 2 h. After that, 150 mL deionized water was slowly added to the solution and the temperature was maintained at 98 • C for 15 min.…”

“…An obvious absorption peak at 3451 cm −1 in the spectrum of the GDP membrane belongs to O−H stretching, [37] and the peak at ≈1627 cm −1 is the C═O characteristic absorption peak of carboxylate. [38] Compared with the O−H absorption peak near 3480 cm −1 of GO and GP membranes, GD and GDP membranes have obvious red shift, which may be attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between GO and DODAB. [39] TGA is also used to demonstrate the good thermal stability of GDP membrane that could withstand up to 200 °C (Figure S9, Supporting Information).…”
