Preparation and Characterization of Reduced Graphene Nanosheets via Pre-exfoliation of Graphite Flakes

Abstract: In this work, the reduced graphene nanosheets were synthesized from pre-exfoliated graphite flakes. The pristine graphite flakes were firstly pre-exfoliated to graphite nanoplatelets in the presence of acetic acid. The obtained graphite nanoplatelets were treated by Hummer's method to produce graphite oxide sheets and were finally exfoliated to graphene nanosheets by ultrasonication and reduction processes. The prepared graphene nanosheets were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffracti… Show more

“…As shown in Fig. 2, the C 1s spectra of the Ni(OH) 2 -graphene hybrid can be resolved (XPSPEAK, version 4.1) into three components, the main peak at binding energy of 284.5 eV is assigned to sp 2 hybridized C atoms in graphene, 8,39 and the broad weaker peaks at 285.9 eV and 288.4 eV are ascribed to the vestigial C-O species (epoxy or hydroxyls) on graphene, 8,39,40 manifested that graphene oxide was properly reduced during the hydrothermal process, and quality graphenes in the hybrid materials were achieved.…”

“…7c) the intensity ratio of sp 2 /sp 3 carbons was found to be around 3.4 eV with the emergence of another band at 287.4 eV. This band may be the double bonds of carbonyl groups [39], formed on the side wall of fly ash nanoparticles. This is a very significant result, showing that functional groups can be introduced without chemical treatment, perhaps due to the ball milling in air.…”

“…6b and 7) sp 2 carbons are the main part of carbon rich fly ash. It is well understood in the literature that sp 2 carbon nanostructures like CNTs [20][21][22][23][24] and graphene [37,39] have unique mechanical properties. The value of the fraction ratio, i.e., 0.5 wt%, was chosen in the present study because this value was recommended as an optimum concentration by several authors, The typical XPS spectra of untreated (a), ultrasonically treated (b) and ball milled (c) carbon rich fly ash are presented in Fig.…”

“…The interlayer distance of the graphite flakes and the various oxidation levels of GO nanoplatelets were increased throughout the chemical oxidation process. 25 During the oxidation process, oxygen functional groups, phosphate (PO 4 -) and sulphate (SO 4 -), insert themselves into the graphene layers. However, a slight reduction in interlayer spacing was observed from the 72 h processing time to 120 h processing time due to the behaviour of the phenol related band.…”
