Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol/polylactic acid/titanium dioxide nanocomposite films enhanced by γ‐irradiation and its antibacterial activity

Abstract: Synthesis of antimicrobial films for packaging applications is eminent fields of research. This study describes preparation of biodegradable Poly (PVA/PLA/ TiO 2 ) nanocomposite films was carried out by blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polylactic acid (PLA) doped with titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles using solution casting method and then irradiated by γ-irradiation. The properties of the films were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, TGA, and mechanical tests. The addition of TiO 2 nanopartic… Show more

“…Since the absorption of oxygen is significantly higher than for pure EC films, the transmission rate is expected to be lower. Since incorporating TiO 2 nanoparticles is highly beneficial for the gas and water transmission rate and, as reported recently, has impressive antibacterial properties [30][31][32], this simple process of preparing EC films with incorporated nanoparticles shows high potential in active food packaging.…”

“…Synthesis of antibacterial films for packaging applications is significant fields of research [ 36 ]. In this paper, we developed a simple and green process to prepare a very high-efficacy antimicrobial film, an acyclic N -halamine-modified PVA (PVA-MBA-Cl) film.…”

“…It is obvious that PVA-MBA film has lower water absorption and solubility than PVA film, which is due to the nucleophilic reaction between the –OH in PVA and MBA under the action of a base to reduce the hydrophilic groups in the molecules. Compared to PVA-MBA film, PVA-MBA-Cl film exhibits higher water absorption and solubility due to the destruction of the intermolecular action [ 36 ]. The tensile strengths and elongations at break of PVA, PVA-MBA, and PVA-MBA-Cl films are shown in Fig.…”

“…Titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been selected because of their extremely high oxidative power, structural stability, low cost, and most significantly, nontoxicity. 22 Moreover, TiO 2 is an outstanding photocatalyst that aids the degradation of several contaminants present in nature. The excess energy present in these species causes the oxidation of organic molecules that come into contact with the surface.…”
