Preparation and characterization of off-congruent lithium niobate crystals

Abstract: Vapor transport equilibration was used to prepare lithium niobate crystals of a variety of controlled off-congruent compositions. Crystals were characterized through measurement of the ferroelectric Curie temperature Tc and measurement of the temperature for noncritical phase matching TPM of second-harmonic generation from both 1.064- and 1.32-μm laser sources. Across the majority of the single-phase region, both Tc and TPM were observed to vary nearly linearly with Li/Nb ratio. The variation in TPM with Li/Nb… Show more

“…Single crystals commonly produced by the Czochralski method [50] show the congruent composition of about 48.6 mol% Li 2 O. However, using the vapor transport equilibration method the synthesis of near stoichiometric crystals is also possible [51]. Composition changes of Li 2 O within the solid solution range from the lithium-poor to the near stoichiometric composition result in significant changes of physical properties [52,53].…”

“…% and the composition calibration, in the absence of a "zero-parameter" like R, was only based on less precise Curie-temperature measurements. 51 Fig . 8(b) shows, however, that the slope of the curves changes with time passed after crystal growth.…”

“…33 The real crystal composition of the samples was determined using accurate birefringence and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements based on careful comparisons with Curie temperature calibrations. 51 The next step was to produce a calibration curve connecting crystal compositions to results of simple absorption measurements in the near UV spectral range. The position of the band edge was defined as the wavelength where the absorption coefficient a equalled 20 cm…”

“…33 VTE-LT possesses almost ideal composition with low concentration of the bulk nonstoichiometry defects achieved by long-time annealing at the temperature above 1000 C in the Li-rich atmosphere. 37 It is necessary to point out that the domain walls in all crystals of LN and LT family can be visualized in the bulk using RCM. 38,39 The combination of all required properties leads us to choose VTE-LT as the model material for investigation of the experimental verification of the proposed fatigue model.…”
