Preparation and characterization of magnesium doped hydroxyapatite–gelatin nanocomposite

Abstract: Magnesium (Mg) doped hydroxyapatite (HAP)-gelatin (GEL) one-dimensional nanofibers were prepared in the aqueous GEL solution at low temperature (38 uC). The influence of GEL and Mg on morphology and crystal structure was systematically investigated. Different amount Mg doped HAP-GEL and HAP-GEL nanofibrils doped with different amounts of Mg were obtained by self-assembly along with gelatin, and pure HAP and HAP doped with Mg were sphere nanoparticles in the absence of GEL. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) an… Show more

“…This suggests that the lattice parameters of FA reduce as a result of the substitution of Ca 2+ with Mg ions in the FA lattice. On the other hand, since Mg ionic radius (0.065 nm) is smaller than that of Ca 2+ ions (0.099 nm) [25], the substitution of calcium by smaller Mg ions resulted in a contraction of the cell parameters of FA. The contraction of the cell parameters of FA as a result of increasing Mg content has also been reported by Hidouri et al [26].…”

“…A weak sharp band at 3430 cm −1 corresponded to the stretching vibration of the lattice OH − ions and a band at 612 cm −1 was assigned to the OH bending deformation mode. The bands at 1650 and 1552 cm −1 for the sample were the absorptions of amide I and amide II, respectively [30]. The broadening band at 3430 cm −1 in the fluoride sorbed n-HAp@Gel composite is due to electrostatic adsorption between the composite and the fluoride ion [31].…”
