Sodium silicate water glass was modified with sodium polyacrylate as the binder, the composite slurry used for high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating was prepared by mixing glass powder with good lubrication properties in the binder. The properties of the modified binder and high-temperature oxidation resistance of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy coated with composite glass coating were studied by XRD, SEM, EDS, TG-DSC and so on. Results showed that sodium polyacrylate modified water glass could obviously improve the suspension stability of the binder, the pyrolytic carbon in the binder at high temperature could increase the surface tension in the molten glass system, and the composite glass coating could be smooth and dense after heating. Pyrolytic carbon diffused and combined with oxygen in the coating under the heating process to protect the titanium alloy from oxidation. The thickness of the oxide layer was reduced 51% after applying the high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating. The coating also showed a nearly 30% reduction in friction coefficient due to the boundary lubricant regime. During cooling, the coating could be peeled off easily because of the mismatched CTE between the coating and substrate.

Turbocharging the internal combustion engine (ICE) is to increase the power density of the engine or known as the downsizing of the engine. Large amount of heat energy is wasted through the exhaust manifold, coolant, convective and radiate heat transfer. The amount of heat loss generated to the surrounding by operating turbine volute will affect the service life of some automotive components. The current material tungsten used for heavy duty automotive turbine volute casing is heavier and costly if to compare to a new suggested material nickel with thermal barrier ceramic coating as an alternative. Thermal barrier coating is an alternative method for insulating cheaper and lighter engineering components operating in extreme temperature condition, there exist different coating techniques, but high installation cost and high technical skills requirement have restricted their widespread acceptance. The need of simple and cost effective thermal barrier coating has become necessary for the alternative coating method. In this study, slurry based coating method was adopted and the Ni/Basalt slurry mixture was coated by using an automatic film applicator in order ensures a uniform thickness of the coating. Appropriate amount of nickel powder and basalt fibre were mixed to produce the slurry mixture. A composition of 70wt% nickel powder and 30wt% basalt fibre was used in depositing the thermal barrier coating layer on nickel substrate. The coating microstructures were analyzed and evaluated by using Optical Microscopy (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The coatings were also examined with EDX line (Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) in order to determine the phases formed during the coating process. The mechanical properties including adhesion strength and Vickers micro hardness were measured. The results shown that the Ni/Basalt slurry based coating was suitable and appropriate for the coating process of the substrate as an application in the inner passage of the casing.

In the present paper, the bonding strength of Fe-based self-fluxing alloy coating deposited by plasma spraying, gluing and laser remelting and alloying on the steel substrate have been investigated. When flame melting, a globular structure is formed. Against the background of the solid solution carbide-boride phases are clearly distinguishable, between which the Fe–Fe2B and Fe–FeB eutectic colonies are situated. Laser remelting leads to the formation of metastable structures, reinforced with dendrites, consisting of alloyed Fe-α and Fe-γ. At the low laser beam speeds the coating is melted completely with the formation of a cast structure with the dendrites. When the laser beam speed is increased, the dendritic structure gets fragmented. Structures of coatings alloyed with B4C and remelted by the laser beam vary with the increase of the spot speed. The bonding strength of coating without subsequent remelting decreases by 4–5 times in comparison with remelted. The bonding strength of the reinforced glue coating has adhesive and adhesive-cohesive character. When the load increases in the coating, microcracks develop, which gradually spread to the center of the bonding surface. For plasma coatings after laser remelting without additional alloying, the maximum bonding strength is observed with the minimum laser beam speed. With increasing the laser beam speed it decreases almost 1.5 times. In glue coatings reinforced with B4C particulates by laser remelting, the bonding strength is lower by 1.2–1.4 times in comparison with plasma coating.
