Preparation and characterization of a composite nanofiltration membrane interfacially polymerized from cis,cis‐1,3,5‐triaminocyclohexane and trimesoyl chloride

Abstract: cis,cis-1,3,5-Triaminocyclohexane (TAC) was synthesized and used to prepare composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes by interfacial polymerization with trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The surface elemental composition, morphology, and hydrophilicity of the prepared NF membranes were characterized. The separation performances were examined with various salts and polyethylene glycol (PEG400, PEG600) solutions. The effects of preparation conditions were also systematically studied. The NF membrane was negatively charged… Show more

“…Membrane separation properties of TFC 0 , TFC n , and two commercial NF membranes (NF270 and NF90). (a) Pure water permeability and NaCl/MgSO 4 selectivity, (b) rejection of NaCl, MgCl 2 , Na 2 SO 4 , and MgSO 4 (tested at 50 psi using a 1000 ppm salt solution containing a single type of salt), (c) trade-off between pure water permeability and NaCl/MgSO 4 selectivity (based on the literature survey of NF membranes prepared in the laboratory and some commercially available NF membranes, , with the square symbols representing recently published NF membranes that are prepared on nanostructured interfaces), ,, and (d) the required pressure to obtain a target flux of 20 L m –2 h –1 for pretreating a synthetic seawater …”

“…The preparation methods of NF membrane mainly include phase inversion [ 10 , 11 ], interfacial polymerization [ 12 ], grafting [ 13 ] and film deposition on a preformed substrate [ 14 ]. Most of the methods prepare membranes with negatively charged surface.…”
