Abstract: The bio-based solvent dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene) is a green and sustainable alternative to petroleum-based dipolar aprotic solvents. Cyrene can be prepared from cellulose in a simple two-step process and can be produced in a variety of yields. The potential of a biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA)‐TiO2 membrane for air purification is investigated, utilizing the environmentally friendly solvent Cyrene. Through the integration of TiO2 nanoparticles within a PLA matrix, the membrane is used to degrade ethanol as a model volatile organic compound (VOC) under UV light. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X‐ray Analysis (EDX), and UV–vis spectrophotometry confirm the porous structure of the membrane, the even distribution of TiO2, and its effective band gap of 3.06 eV, respectively. Ethanol adsorption is best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting monolayer coverage on a homogeneous surface. Photocatalytic tests demonstrate that the membrane decomposes ethanol (6800 ppm) within 14 min under UV light, generating acetaldehyde, acetic acid, formaldehyde, and formic acid as intermediates, and ultimately producing CO2 and water. Reusability tests indicate a decrease in decomposition time over successive cycles due to increased TiO2 exposure from the gradual degradation of PLA. However, this degradation poses challenges for continuous use, compromising the membrane's long‐term durability.

Cyrene is a new biodegradable solvent, which represents a green alternative to many traditional toxic solvents for advanced polymers. Therefore, this investigation is motivated by interest in applications of Cyrene for polymer processing. The feasibility of solubilization of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyethyl methacrylate (PEMA) in Cyrene is demonstrated. The ability to form relatively concentrated solutions of the high molecular mass polymers is an important factor for the formation of PMMA and PEMA films by a dip coating method. It was found that the polymer coatings provide corrosion protection of stainless steel in 30 g L−1 NaCl solutions. Another important finding is that the use of Cyrene facilitates the fabrication of stable suspensions of hydroxyapatite (HAp), microdiamond, and nanodiamond particles. Therefore, the problems of the dispersant selection for dispersion of chemically inert diamond and development of biocompatible dispersants are avoided using Cyrene. For the fabrication of composite films, HAp nanorods with reduced particle size are obtained using rutin as a chelating capping agent. Composite films containing HAp, microdiamond and nanodiamond in the PMMA or PEMA matrix are obtained. The composite films are promising for biomedical applications. It was found that the film morphology, composition and microstructure are influenced by the solvent–particle–polymer interactions and processing conditions.

In this study, loose nanofiltration membranes made of polysulfone dissolved in co-solvents PolarClean and gamma-Valerolactone were prepared via slot die coating (SDC) on a roll-to-roll (R2R) system by directly coating them onto a support layer or free standing. A solution flow rate of 20 mL/min, substrate speed of 17.1 mm/s, and coating gap of 0.1 mm resulted in the formation of membranes without structural defects. Pre-wetting the support layer with dope solution minimized shrinkage of membrane layer thickness and improved interfacial adhesion. Membrane samples produced using SDC exhibited properties and performance consistent with bench-scale doctor blade extruded samples; pre-wetted and uncompressed samples (SDC-3) exhibited the highest rejection of bovine serum albumin (99.20% ± 1.31%) and along with adequate mean permeability during filtration (70.5 ± 8.33 LMH/bar). This study shows that combining sustainable materials development with SDC provides a holistic approach to membrane separations to bridge materials discovery and membrane formation.
