Preparation and Antifouling Property of Polyurethane Film Modified by PHMG and HA Using Layer-by-Layer Assembly

Abstract: To reduce the possibility of bacterial infection and implant-related complications, surface modification on polyurethane (PU) film is an ideal solution to endow hydrophobic PU with antibacterial and antifouling properties. In this work, a variety of polyhexamethylene guanidine/ hyaluronic acid (PHMG/HA) multilayer films were self-assembled layer-by-layer on PU films using polyanions, carboxyl-activated HA, and polycations PHMG by controlling the concentration of these polyelectrolytes as well as the number of … Show more

“…The accumulation of killed bacteria forming bio‐film on surface supplied a site for bacteria proliferation and further leaded to the decline of antibacterial performance 57 . Hence, CS was introduced onto the surface of PU‐PDA/PHMG discs, and the hydrophilic CS ensured to prevent the adhesion of bacterial whatever live and dead from adhering on the surface 58 . Moreover, XPS measurement proved that the CS and PHMG co‐existed on the upper layer of surface which provided the chance for PHMG to contact with bacteria.…”

The outstanding antibacterial property of PU-PDA/PHMG/CS was observed in Figure 7h that there were almost no bacteria adhering on the surface.…”

“…As the content of PHMG-SS increases, the antifouling performance also gradually increases, because the guanidine groups on PHMG-SS can combine with water molecules and form a hydration layer (Regev et al, 2022). Besides, the hydrophilic property of the membrane surface is also an important factor affecting protein adsorption, and the introduction of PHMG-SS leads to an increase in hydrophilicity (Yuan et al, 2021). In summary, the reduction of protein adsorption is attributed to the PHMG-SS.…”

“…Other methods include quantifying the amount of foulant left after a “removal” process, which is especially prevalent for bacteria-based studies. For example, a sample may be washed to remove planktonic bacteria and then sonicated to remove all adhered bacteria. , However, while there are multiple ways to quantify foulant buildup, it is critical to have multiple means of quantification due to potential discrepancies in microbial counts. Because methods of microbial quantification following foulant removal can vary greatly depending on lab technique and methodology, as indicated by Branck et al, who tested recovery rates of Listeria monocytogenes among standard swabs and sonicated swabs .…”
