Mixed-valent iron [Fe(II)-Fe(III)] minerals such as magnetite and green rust have received a significant amount of attention over recent decades, especially in the environmental sciences. These mineral phases are intrinsic and essential parts of biogeochemical cycling of metals and organic carbon and play an important role regarding the mobility, toxicity, and redox transformation of organic and inorganic pollutants. The formation pathways, mineral properties, and applications of magnetite and green rust are currently active areas of research in geochemistry, environmental mineralogy, geomicrobiology, material sciences, environmental engineering, and environmental remediation. These aspects ultimately dictate the reactivity of magnetite and green rust in the environment, which has important consequences for the application of these mineral phases, for example in remediation strategies. In this review we discuss the properties, occurrence, formation by biotic as well as abiotic pathways, characterization techniques, and environmental applications of magnetite and green rust in the environment. The aim is to present a detailed overview of the key aspects related to these mineral phases which can be used as an important resource for researchers working in a diverse range of fields dealing with mixed-valent iron minerals.

The emission of heavy metals into the environment may be natural or anthropogenic (Taghipour and Mosaferi, 2013). Anthropogenic impacts including industrial discharge, domestic sewage, non-point source runoff and atmospheric precipitation are the main sources of toxic heavy metals that enter aquatic systems ﴾Langston et al., 1999﴿. Heavy metals are bio-accumulated in living organisms when taken up and stored more than softened (metabolized) or excreted (Gupta, 2013). Heavy metals toxicity has been reportable to be caused by completely different means; e.g., from contamination of drinking-water (Pb pipes), high air concentrations close to emission sources (thus enter into soil) or from food chain. The heavy metals are poisonous as the result of the bio-accumulation (Lenntech, 2012; Gupta, 2013 & Chibuike and Obiora, 2014). The Nile in Egypt facing major environmental problems associated with the dispersal or disposal of agricultural, industrial and urban wastes generated by human activities (Abdel-Mohsien and Mahmoud, 2015).

The enzymatic processes are increasingly highlights, especially in the synthesis of chemical products with high added value. The enzyme immobilization can improve industrial biocatalytic processes. The immobilization of enzymes provides the production of efficient, stable biocatalysts, possibility of reuse and easy purification of the products, when compared to the free enzymes. There is a growing research for more efficient methods of enzyme immobilization. In this context, the choice of support and immobilization strategy can significantly improve the final enzymatic properties. In this review paper, we aimed to discuss the versatility of biocatalysts immobilized enzymes design, focusing on the opportunities and disadvantages for each method presented. They discussed the recent development of enzyme immobilization methods and applications relating the final properties of the produced biocatalysts with the desired goals.
