Prep-Along Facilitated Posterior Crown Preparation in the Preclinical Dental Setting: A Multimedia Approach

Abstract: Introduction Dental students often seek visual aids and demonstrations when attempting to perform new procedures. This video resource provides an adjunctive teaching tool for a crown preparation on an ivorine molar using the “prep-along” method. This method teaches crown preparation in a uniform, step-by-step manner while providing feedback to students after each step. Methods Prior to the daily simulation clinic session, a calibration session was held for faculty. Foll… Show more

“…Liu et al found that dental residents in the step-by-step group performed better than those in the all-in-one group in crown preparation, regardless of whether the outcome was evaluated by learners, experts, or digital systems [13]. Lukas et al [14] combined the multimedia approach with the step-by-step method in the teaching of crown preparation, and found that 94% of the undergraduate dental students responded favorably to this method, while the teaching faculty felt that this method of instruction increased efficiency. The better outcomes of the step-by-step method can be attributed to several factors.…”

“…To our knowledge, there are a few articles about the step-by-step method in dental education, and these articles focused on crown preparation. The participants were dental residents [13] and third-and fourth-year dental students [14]. However, the application of the step-by-step method in other dental courses, such as pediatric dentistry or operative dentistry, has not been studied.…”

“…In MedEdPORTAL, there were a few publications that showcased the helpfulness of video aids in teaching dental students on specific clinical procedures. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Methods Development I created the three concept videos on dental photography by recording narrated PowerPoint slideshows. I first identified sets of photographs that were recommended for case presentations and divided them into three main categories: (1) 360-degree intraoral photographs, (2) dynamic movement intraoral photographs, and (3) extraoral photographs.…”
