Surgery makes many demands of both hospitals and patients. For the hospital, there are many procedural aspects: admission, health assessment, and patient education; the actual operation; and the post-surgical recovery period, a time when patients are susceptible to complications and nosocomial infections. For the patient, surgery means physical pain and emotional anxiety. A pre-operative assessment clinic (POAC), however, can assist both hospital and patients by streamlining their admission, assessment, and education, by decreasing the time they spend in the hospital recovering from surgery, and by easing their anxiety. In this article, the authors describe a study of a POAC at a Canadian hospital.

The purposes of this study were to examine (a) the relationship between patients' own reports of the highest grade completed in school and their actual reading level and (b) the relationship between literacy and the level of knowledge about self-care after patients had received education involving written discharge instructions. In addition, the content of the materials was analyzed for its cultural sensitivity. Twenty-six patients who had had either hip- or knee-replacement surgery at an inner-city hospital participated in this correlational descriptive study. There was a significant negative relationship between patients' own reports of highest grade completed in school and their actual reading level (r = -.39, p < .05). Rehabilitation nurses should find this study beneficial for developing, assessing, and using written patient education materials appropriate for the reading level of their patient populations.

aboratory tests are part of the physiological assessment that determines a L patient's health status, identifies risk factors, and establishes baseline data that can be used for intraoperative or postoperative comparisons.' Laboratory test results help surgeons determine whether surgery should take place, be postponed, or be canceled. Initiating surgery before laboratory results are available puts a patient at risk and has legal implications for nurses.Hospital policies state that nurses are responsible for preparing patients for surgery; this preparation includes having the appropriate laboratory test results in patients' charts before surgery. Surgeons and anesthesia personnel, however, usually make the final decision about taking patients to surgery when laboratory results are pending, even though nurses are held responsible by hospital policies for this decision. Often, nurses and anesthesia personnel are pressured by surgeons or time constraints to take patients to surgery without available laboratory test results. If personnel do wait for the laboratory tests results, the delayed cases affect the entire surgery schedule.Nurses and anesthesia personnel at a medical center in Utah identified such surgical delays as an ongoing problem at their institution. To determine if an on-site satellite laboratory would eliminate these delays and prevent patients from undergoing surgery before their laboratory test results were available, I initiated the study described in this article. Purpose of the Studyhe purpose of this study was to measure the impact of an on-site satellite laborato-T ry on the availability of laboratory results in our same day surgical center. The following variables were measured before and after implementation of the on-site satellite laboratory.How many surgeries were delayed by patients' pending laboratory results? How many patients went to surgery before laboratory tests were available? 0 How much time did it take to get laboratory results in the same day surgical unit? Conceptual Frameworkchose a well-known systems framework as the conceptual framework for the study.
