Preoperative staging of primary breast cancer.A multicentric study

Abstract: This article reports on a consecutive series of 3627 breast cancer (BC) patients undergoing preoperative staging by chest x-ray (CXR), bone x-ray (BXR) or bone scintigraphy (BS), and liver ecography (LE) or liver scintigraphy (LS). The detection rate (DR) of preclinical asymptomatic distant metastases depended on the T and N category (TNM classification system), and was very low (CXR: 0.30%, BXR: 0.64%, BS: 0.90%, LE: 0.24%, LS: 0.23%). The sensitivity, determined after a 6-month follow-up, was below 0.50% for… Show more

“…For patients with stage I, II, and III disease, bone metastasis rate is ranged from 0.1-6.8%, 0.8-8.8%, and 1.2-24.5% [1,2,4,22,23]. Those studies support that a BS is necessary for T3N1M0 and stage II/III patients with skeletal symptoms (such as pain and increased alkaline phosphatase).…”

“…Schneider et al [7] found that the overall rate of distant metastasis was only 3.9%, and several papers have reported the detection rates of individual staging investigations. For isotope bone scan this has been published as 0.5–11% [5, 7, 18–23], for liver ultrasound 0.24–3.3% [5, 7, 20, 24], and for chest radiography 0.2–1.2% [7, 18, 20, 25, 26]. …”
