Preoperative serum-gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) does not represent an independent prognostic factor in a European cohort of patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma

Abstract: In the cohort studied, patients with an elevated (≥40 U/L) preoperative serum-GGT had a subsequently shorter MFS only in univariate analysis. In contrast to previous studies, our data failed to demonstrate preoperatively assessed serum-GGT as an independent prognostic factor in patients with non-metastatic RCC.

“…Unfortunately, we failed to demonstrate the baseline serum GTT level as an independent prognostic variable in this group of patients. Moreover, the preoperative serum GGT levels did not represent an independent prognostic factor in a European cohort of patients with non-metastatic renal cell carcinoma [ 22 ].…”

“…Some studies initially focused on the possible association between serum γ-GGT and the incidence of various cancers 31 32 . More recently, elevated serum γ-GGT has been associated with a worse prognosis in many cancers, including renal cell carcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and endometrial cancer 20 33 34 .…”

“…Additionally, this parameter was determined as an independent risk factor for a worse oncologic outcome and could improve the predictive accuracy of previously reported prognostic models [ 16 ]. Nevertheless, a recent study involving a European cohort of nonmetastatic RCC patients failed to validate the prognostic significance of preoperative GGT [ 17 ]. A probable cause of this phenomenon was the composition of patients.…”

“…Specifically, there were two studies evaluating the prognostic impact of preoperative GGT in RCC patients. However, the final conclusions based on the results of multivariate Cox analyses were conflicting [ 16 , 17 ]. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the prognostic value of preoperative GGT in the subset of RCC patients with venous tumor thrombus.…”
