Preoperative Kidney Tumor Embolization as Procedure for Therapy of Advanced Kidney Cancer

Abstract: Introduction:Preoperative kidney tumor embolization is standard procedure for therapy in advanced kidney cancer. Preoperative embolization has a goal to reduce intraoperative bleeding and also to shorten the time of surgery.Materials and methods:We retrospectively observed 50 patients between 2000-2011, in which the preoperative embolization was performed. Mean age of patients was 64 years. All patients with preoperative embolization were compared with the group of 51 patients from Urology Sarajevo, who underw… Show more

“…Targeting drugs [ 7 , 8 ], contrast agents [ 9 , 10 ], biomaterials [ 11 , 12 , 13 ], stem cells [ 14 ], and drug delivery systems [ 15 , 16 ] by injection into the renal artery has confirmed the effectiveness of local targeting to the kidney in many studies. However, mainly two variants of using this technique have reached real clinical practice: the introduction of contrast agents (for diagnostics, namely angiography [ 4 , 17 ]) and irreversible embolization (preliminary procedures before total nephrectomy [ 18 , 19 ]) or chemoembolization [ 20 ].…”

“…The risk factors for RCC may vary, including smoking, obesity, hypertension, dietary habits and living environment (6). Diverse treatments for RCC have been reported, including the use of drugs, virus-based gene therapies and ablative therapies, in addition to preoperative tumor embolization (7-10). However, novel therapies are required due to the complexity and poor prognosis of RCC.…”

“…Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) accounts for approxi- [7,13]. Thus, according to Schwartz and coauthors EIBL volume during radical nephrectomy in patients with RCC after RAE with median tumor size of 11.2 cm was variable and ranged from 100 to 5000 ml [11]. In another new research conducted by Ramaswamy, was established, that blood transfusion volume after radical nephrectomy in patients with RCC after total RAE also was also significantly variable and ranged from 222 to 1050 ml [10].…”
